PM Modi Awarded Seychelles' Top Civilian Honour "Guardian of the Blue Horizon"

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday was conferred with Seychelles' highest civilian honour, the prestigious "Guardian of the Blue Horizon", in recognition of his global leadership in environmental conservation, climate action and sustainable development.

With this latest recognition, Prime Minister Modi has now received the highest civilian awards from 34 countries, further strengthening his stature as one of the most internationally honoured world leaders.

After receiving the award, Modi thanked the people and government of Seychelles and President Patrick Herminie for the honour. He emphasized that India and Seychelles must work together to transform the Indian Ocean into an "Ocean of Opportunities" through enhanced cooperation and shared prosperity.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour in Victoria, the capital of Seychelles.

Seychelles Recognises Modi's Environmental Leadership

The Seychelles government honoured Prime Minister Modi for his remarkable contribution towards environmental protection, combating climate change and promoting sustainable development at the global level.

This marks the third major international environmental recognition received by Modi.

In May 2026, the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) presented him with the prestigious Agricola Medal. Earlier, in 2018, the United Nations conferred upon him the globally acclaimed Champions of the Earth Award, its highest environmental honour.

PM Modi Holds Bilateral Talks With Seychelles President Patrick Herminie

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held extensive bilateral discussions with Seychelles President Patrick Herminie on Sunday to further deepen strategic and economic ties between the two nations.

During the talks, both leaders reviewed cooperation across multiple sectors, including maritime security, trade, healthcare, digital infrastructure, agriculture and connectivity.

Modi said India and Seychelles would continue exploring new opportunities for industrial cooperation and strengthen people-to-people exchanges. He also assured that India would share its successful experience in digital public infrastructure with Seychelles.

The Prime Minister arrived in Seychelles on Saturday for a three-day official visit. President Herminie welcomed him at the State House in Victoria before delegation-level talks commenced.

Key Highlights of PM Modi's Seychelles Visit

Chief Guest at Seychelles' Golden Jubilee Celebrations

Prime Minister Modi attended the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Seychelles' independence as the Chief Guest.

An Indian Armed Forces contingent participated in the parade, while Indian Navy warship INS Tarkash and hydrographic survey vessel INS Ikshak also took part in the celebrations.

India Announces $175 Million Development Package

India announced a financial assistance package worth US$175 million (approximately Rs 1,651 crore) to support Seychelles' infrastructure and development projects.

India also gifted the indigenously-built Fast Patrol Vessel 'PS Lespavar' to strengthen Seychelles' maritime capabilities.

Major Agreements Signed

Several important agreements were signed during the visit, including:

Extradition Treaty to strengthen law enforcement and security cooperation.
Healthcare Partnership for the construction of a national hospital in Seychelles.
Cooperation in Space Technology and Agriculture.

PM Modi Plants Rare Coco de Mer Tree in Seychelles

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi planted a Coco de Mer sapling, a rare palm species found exclusively in Seychelles.

The tree is famous for producing the world's largest and heaviest seed, weighing between 15 and 30 kilograms.

The Coco de Mer tree can take 20 to 40 years to mature and may live for more than 300 years. Historically, its giant seeds drifting across the Indian Ocean gave rise to legends that they originated from mystical underwater forests.

India-Seychelles Relations Complete 50 Years

Prime Minister Modi described Seychelles as a key maritime neighbour and an important partner under India's MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) vision.

Highlighting that 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles, Modi said bilateral ties are founded on mutual trust, democratic values, respect for diversity and strong people-to-people connections.

The Prime Minister said the visit would further strengthen maritime cooperation and advance the shared vision of a secure, peaceful and prosperous Indian Ocean region.

Strategic Importance of PM Modi's Seychelles Visit

India and Seychelles share longstanding strategic ties dating back to Seychelles' independence in 1976.

As part of enhanced maritime cooperation, India announced the gifting of a second Dornier maritime surveillance aircraft to Seychelles and inaugurated a coastal surveillance radar network developed with Indian assistance.
