Powerful 7.4 Quake Strikes Colombia, 132 Dead

At least 132 people have died and around 570 others have been injured after a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, triggering widespread destruction and a major emergency response.

The Colombia Earthquake caused severe damage across several parts of the country, with buildings collapsing and thousands of homes reportedly affected. Pereira has emerged as one of the worst-hit areas, with around 60 deaths reported there. The city is located less than 64 kilometres from the reported epicentre.

7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Western Colombia

The earthquake was centred near San José del Palmar in Colombia's Chocó region, according to seismic monitoring agencies. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake occurred at considerable depth beneath the surface.

The powerful tremor was felt across a broad area, including Bogotá, Colombia's capital. Residents in several cities reportedly rushed outside buildings after feeling intense shaking.

The disaster has also disrupted transport and essential services in affected areas, while rescue teams continue searching damaged structures for survivors.

Pereira Among Worst-Hit Cities

Pereira has suffered a particularly heavy human toll following the earthquake. Reports indicate that approximately 60 people have died in the city alone.

The wider region has also experienced significant structural damage, with authorities assessing collapsed buildings, damaged homes and disruption to public infrastructure.

The extent of destruction remains subject to change as emergency personnel reach remote and severely affected locations.

Colombia Launches Emergency Rescue Operations

The Colombian government has mobilised emergency services to respond to the disaster. Search-and-rescue teams are working in affected communities while authorities assess casualties and infrastructure damage.

Bogotá has also established collection points for essential relief materials, including drinking water, blankets, packaged food, hygiene supplies and first-aid equipment.

Additional rescue personnel are being prepared for deployment to the worst-affected areas as relief operations continue.

Colombia is situated in one of the world's most active seismic regions. Its location near the boundaries of major tectonic plates makes the country vulnerable to earthquakes and other geological hazards.

The interaction between the Nazca Plate and South American Plate, along with other regional tectonic structures, generates significant geological activity.

Colombia's position along the broader Pacific Ring of Fire also contributes to its exposure to earthquakes and volcanic activity. The movement and interaction of tectonic plates can build enormous underground pressure, which is periodically released through earthquakes.

Colombia Earthquake: Rescue Efforts Continue

With the death toll already at 132 and hundreds injured, authorities remain focused on locating survivors, treating the wounded and providing assistance to displaced residents.

Emergency agencies are continuing damage assessments, while officials warn that the situation could evolve as information arrives from remote areas.

The latest Colombia earthquake has become a major humanitarian emergency, with western parts of the country facing the greatest impact.
