Princee Rani Appointed First Woman IG of BSF Tripura Frontier

In a landmark development for the security establishment in Tripura, 2005-batch IPS officer Princee Rani of the Tripura cadre has been appointed as the Inspector General (IG) of the Border Security Force (BSF) Tripura Frontier.

With this appointment, Princee Rani will become the first woman IPS officer to head the BSF Tripura Frontier, a strategically significant border formation guarding the India-Bangladesh international border.

According to sources in the BSF, she is expected to arrive in Tripura shortly to formally take over the charge of the frontier.

Princee Rani had earlier joined the National Security Guard (NSG) as Inspector General on June 6, 2024, while serving on central deputation.

Speculation regarding her return to Tripura had intensified recently after her husband, senior IAS officer Piyush Kumar Goyal, returned to the state upon completion of his central deputation and resumed important administrative responsibilities.

However, sources confirmed that Princee Rani will not be returning to the Tripura Police department. Instead, she has been assigned a major leadership role in the Border Security Force.

Official records indicate that she was transferred from the NSG to the BSF as Inspector General on April 10 this year.

As per the directives issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, she will continue to serve in the BSF on central deputation until February 5, 2029.

Tripura shares an 856-kilometre-long international border with Bangladesh, making the BSF Tripura Frontier one of the most sensitive and strategically important frontiers in the northeastern region of the country.

The border remains highly significant from the security perspective due to challenges related to illegal infiltration, trans-border smuggling, narcotics trafficking, and other cross-border criminal activities.

During her tenure in the Tripura Police, Princee Rani handled several key assignments and played an important role in both traffic management and police administration.

Security officials believe that her extensive administrative experience and field-level policing expertise will greatly help in strengthening border management and operational coordination in the frontier.

Meanwhile, IAS officer Piyush Kumar Goyal, her husband, has also recently resumed important responsibilities in the Tripura government after returning from central deputation.

With both officers now serving in crucial positions in the state, their roles are being viewed as significant for Tripura’s administrative and security framework.

At present, Alok Kumar Chakraborty is serving as the Inspector General of the BSF Tripura Frontier.

He had assumed charge of the frontier on October 17 last year.

According to BSF sources, Chakraborty is expected to hand over the responsibility to Princee Rani in the coming days.
