Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently advocated dialogue and diplomacy to bring the Russia-Ukraine war to an end, while also highlighting India's cultural and linguistic diversity as an example of unity.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly raised the need to end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomatic negotiations.
Putin said Modi brings up the Ukraine war during their meetings and supports efforts aimed at finding a peaceful settlement acceptable to both Russia and Ukraine.
According to Putin, the Indian prime minister is in favour of ending the conflict at the earliest possible opportunity and believes that direct dialogue can help the two sides identify a mutually acceptable way forward.
Putin: Modi Continues to Raise Ukraine War Issue
Putin described Modi as a friend and said the Indian leader has consistently discussed the Ukraine conflict with him.
The Russian president indicated that Modi has offered ideas on how negotiations could contribute to ending the war. India has maintained that dialogue and diplomacy remain important tools for resolving international conflicts.
The Russia-Ukraine war began in February 2022 and has continued despite repeated diplomatic initiatives and negotiations involving different international actors.
Putin and Modi Discuss Ukraine Conflict
Putin and Modi also held discussions ahead of the BRICS summit in New Delhi last month. During the meeting, Putin reportedly briefed the Indian prime minister on developments relating to the conflict in Ukraine and efforts to explore avenues for peace.
Diplomatic contacts surrounding the war have continued at different levels, with several countries expressing support for negotiations and a peaceful resolution.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov had earlier said Russia would be receptive to an Indian initiative aimed at promoting peace in Ukraine.
Peskov also indicated that Moscow and New Delhi support resolving international disputes through dialogue and diplomatic channels.
Putin Praises India's Diversity and Unity
During his remarks, Putin also spoke about India's enormous cultural and linguistic diversity.
The Russian president said India's ability to maintain national unity despite its large population, numerous languages and varied cultural traditions was particularly noteworthy.
Putin recalled a conversation with Prime Minister Modi about India's linguistic landscape. He said Modi had explained that a large section of India's population speaks Hindi, while millions of others communicate in different regional languages.
Despite these differences, Putin noted that people across India continue to live together as part of a unified nation.
India's Diversity Can Offer Lessons to the World
Putin said India's social and cultural experience demonstrates how people belonging to different linguistic and cultural backgrounds can preserve their diversity while maintaining national unity.
His remarks highlighted India's pluralistic character and the coexistence of different traditions within the country.
The Russian president suggested that India's experience could provide broader lessons for societies dealing with differences in language, culture and identity.
Putin Warns of Strong Russian Response to Any Attack
Putin also addressed Russia's security concerns and said Moscow does not intend to attack any European country.
However, he warned that Russia would use its available military capabilities if Russian territory came under attack.
The Russian president accused Western countries of increasing tensions with Moscow and pointed to military exercises in the Baltic region and developments involving Russian vessels as examples of what Russia considers provocative actions.
Kaliningrad Tensions Add to Russia-NATO Concerns
Putin's latest remarks come amid continuing tensions between Russia and NATO.
Moscow has previously warned against any attempt to isolate or separate the Kaliningrad region from the rest of Russia. Russian officials have indicated that such a situation could trigger a serious military response.

India Continues to Emphasise Dialogue and Diplomacy
The comments by Putin once again place India's diplomatic position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict in focus.
New Delhi has repeatedly maintained that lasting peace requires dialogue and diplomacy. Prime Minister Modi has also maintained contact with leaders involved in the conflict while advocating efforts aimed at reducing hostilities and creating conditions for a peaceful settlement.
Putin's comments underline the continued diplomatic engagement between Moscow and New Delhi over the Ukraine conflict, while his remarks on India's diversity add another dimension to his latest assessment of India's role and experience.
