Vladimir Putin said on Saturday that he believes the long-running Russia-Ukraine war may be approaching its conclusion, raising fresh speculation about possible peace negotiations between Moscow, Kyiv and European leaders.
Speaking to reporters at the Kremlin after Russia’s annual Victory Day celebrations, Putin said, “I think that the matter is coming to an end,” referring to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The Russia-Ukraine war, which began after Moscow’s full-scale invasion in 2022, triggered the worst confrontation between Russia and the West since the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, when fears of nuclear war gripped the world.

Victory Day Parade Held Amid Continuing Ukraine War
Putin made the remarks after Russia held a comparatively scaled-back Victory Day parade on May 9. The national holiday commemorates the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany during World War II and honors the nearly 27 million Soviet citizens who died during the war.
Despite repeated military offensives, Russia has not achieved a complete victory in eastern Ukraine. Russian forces continue to battle for control over the Donbas region, while Ukrainian troops remain entrenched in several fortified cities.
War Has Caused Massive Human and Economic Losses
The conflict has become the deadliest war in Europe since World War II, with hundreds of thousands reportedly killed or injured. Large parts of Ukraine have been devastated, while Russia’s economy and diplomatic ties with Europe have also suffered heavily.
Relations between Russia and European nations are currently at their lowest point since the Cold War era.
According to reports, leaders of the European Union are preparing for possible diplomatic talks regarding the conflict.
Putin Open to Talks With Europe
When asked whether he was willing to engage in discussions with European leaders, Putin said he preferred former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as a possible interlocutor.
“For me personally, the former Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Schroeder, is preferable,” Putin stated.
The Kremlin recently claimed that European governments should take the first step toward restoring diplomatic communication, arguing that Western nations had cut ties with Moscow after the 2022 invasion.
Meeting With Zelenskyy Possible After Peace Deal
Putin also commented on the possibility of meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to him, such a meeting could take place only after a long-term peace agreement is finalized.
The statement comes amid increasing international pressure for a negotiated settlement to end the prolonged Russia-Ukraine conflict.
