Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his recent “seven appeals” to citizens aimed at tackling the economic impact of the ongoing West Asia crisis. Rahul Gandhi termed the Prime Minister’s remarks a sign of “failure” and alleged that the government is no longer capable of effectively running the country.
In a post shared on X, Rahul Gandhi criticized PM Modi’s suggestions asking people to reduce fuel consumption, avoid buying gold, postpone foreign trips, and adopt work-from-home measures. He said these were not “sermons” but admissions of policy failure.
“Yesterday Modi asked the public for sacrifice. Don’t buy gold, don’t go abroad, use less petrol, reduce fertilizer and cooking oil, take the metro, work from home. These aren’t sermons. These are failures,” Rahul Gandhi wrote.
The Congress leader further stated that after 12 years in power, the government has reached a stage where citizens are being instructed on what to buy, where to travel, and how to live their daily lives.
Prime Minister Modi made the remarks during a public rally in Secunderabad on Sunday, where he highlighted the need to reduce India’s dependence on imports in order to save foreign exchange and protect the environment amid rising global tensions and fuel prices linked to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
PM Modi’s Key Appeals To Citizens
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi emphasized that India does not possess large oil reserves and therefore must reduce dependence on imported fuel.
Key points from PM Modi’s speech:
-
“India has no large oil wells, therefore we must reduce the use of petrol, gas and diesel.”
-
Encourage work from home to reduce fuel consumption.
-
Reduce unnecessary vehicle usage and promote metro travel and carpooling.
-
Families should reduce cooking oil consumption for better health and to save foreign exchange.
-
The country should reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers and rapidly adopt natural farming.
-
Citizens should postpone foreign travel for weddings, vacations and other non-essential reasons.
-
People should avoid purchasing or gifting gold for one year in the national interest, as gold imports consume massive foreign exchange reserves.
The remarks have triggered political debate, with opposition parties accusing the Centre of shifting the burden of economic pressures onto ordinary citizens.
