A red alert has been issued for parts of Tripura as the state braces for severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and strong winds, with conditions expected to worsen over the next few days.
The Meteorological Centre in Agartala has placed Khowai and West Tripura districts under red alert from April 28 to 29, warning of intense thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 60–80 kmph. These areas are also likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall between 7 cm and 20 cm.

Other districts across the state remain under an orange alert during the same period, with forecasts predicting thunderstorms, lightning, wind speeds of 50–60 kmph, and heavy rainfall at isolated places.
The weather system is expected to persist through April 29–30, when all districts will be under orange alert. North Tripura, Unakoti, Dhalai, Khowai, and West Tripura districts may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, while other regions could receive 7 cm to 11 cm of rain.

The warning follows recent intense weather activity in the state, including a powerful nor’wester that brought widespread rainfall and strong winds. Dhalai district recorded the highest rainfall at 159 mm, with wind speeds reaching 111 kmph. Unakoti received 118.4 mm, while Khowai and North Tripura recorded 121 mm and 105.5 mm respectively. West Tripura saw 61.4 mm of rainfall, with other districts such as Sepahijala, Gomati, and South Tripura also experiencing significant weather conditions.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel during storms, and take precautions against lightning and strong winds as the adverse weather continues.
