In a major political development in Tripura’s tribal administration, Tipra Motha leader Runiel Debbarma formally assumed charge as the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council on Tuesday. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the ADC headquarters in Khumlung, marking the beginning of a new leadership phase in the autonomous body.
Background: Mandate for change
The elevation of Runiel Debbarma comes in the backdrop of a decisive electoral mandate secured by Tipra Motha, which won 24 seats on its own in the recently concluded ADC elections. The result had triggered strong speculation about a generational shift in leadership within the party.

Putting those speculations to rest, party supremo Pradyut Kishore Debbarma opted to back a young face, signaling a strategic move to consolidate grassroots support and energize the party’s organizational structure. Runiel Debbarma, who secured a record margin from the Bodhjangnagar–Wakinagar constituency, emerged as the consensus choice.
Other key appointments
The ceremony also saw CK Jamatiya taking oath as the Chairman of the ADC, while Ranjan Reang was sworn in as an Executive Member.
According to party insiders, the remaining Executive Members will be inducted in phases after the completion of the upcoming village committee elections, suggesting a calibrated approach to governance formation.
Vision and priorities
Addressing the gathering after taking oath, Runiel Debbarma outlined his priorities with a clear focus on tribal welfare and institutional strengthening. He emphasized that his administration would work “with dedication for the overall development of the tribal people” and remain committed to safeguarding indigenous rights.
He also highlighted the need to make the ADC “stronger and more effective,” indicating a push toward improved governance, better service delivery, and enhanced autonomy in administrative functioning.

Political presence and reactions
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by senior leaders, including State Minister Brisketu Debbarma, along with party MLAs, MDCs, and other top functionaries. Their presence underscored the importance the party attaches to the ADC as a key political and administrative institution in tribal areas.
Outlook
Political observers view this transition as a calculated move by Tipra Motha to blend electoral strength with youthful leadership. There is growing optimism in political circles that under Runiel Debbarma’s leadership, the ADC could witness renewed momentum in both development initiatives and organizational consolidation.
The coming months, particularly after the formation of the full executive body, will be crucial in determining how effectively the new leadership translates its mandate into governance outcomes.
