Russia Drone Strike Near Kyiv Kills 37, Sparks Huge Explosions

A Russian drone attack on a weapons storage facility near Kyiv has killed at least 37 people and injured 42 others, including four children, after a massive explosion ripped through the site and surrounding residential areas.

The strike took place in Myla, a village west of the Ukrainian capital, where a weapons facility was reportedly storing ammunition, mines, drones and other military equipment. The resulting blasts caused widespread destruction and damaged homes and other buildings nearby.

According to reports, the explosion also triggered fires across the area and forced hundreds of residents to leave their homes. The incident has emerged as one of the deadliest Russian attacks in the Kyiv region this year.

Zelenskyy Orders Investigation Into Weapons Storage

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy questioned the decision to keep large quantities of explosives and military equipment so close to civilian settlements.

Zelenskyy said authorities had begun criminal proceedings to determine whether the storage of weapons at the location complied with Ukrainian law and safety regulations.

The investigation will also examine the decisions taken by officials responsible for the placement, deployment and maintenance of the weapons facility.

Ukrainian authorities have indicated that the destruction was not simply a consequence of the Russian strike but also raised serious questions about how explosive materials were stored near populated areas.

Russia Confirms Strike on Military Facility

Russia's Defence Ministry acknowledged that its forces had attacked a weapons-related facility in the Kyiv region.

Moscow said the target contained components and equipment connected with long-range drones. Ukraine, however, has focused attention on the devastating consequences of the explosion in the surrounding civilian area.

The blast caused extensive damage to nearby buildings, while emergency teams continued rescue and relief operations after the attack.

Earlier Explosion Raises Fresh Safety Concerns

The Myla incident has also revived concerns over Ukraine's handling of explosive military materials.

A similar deadly explosion occurred in Vyshneve in July, killing people and damaging hundreds of homes. An investigation into that incident reportedly found failures in following regulations governing the storage of explosive materials close to residential areas.

Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi said authorities should have learned from the earlier tragedy. He described the repetition of similar safety failures during wartime as an extremely serious form of negligence and demanded strict punishment for those found responsible.

Ukraine Faces Growing Air Defence Pressure

The deadly depot explosion comes as Russia continues to launch frequent drone attacks against Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine.

The repeated strikes are putting additional pressure on Ukraine's air-defence network. Ukrainian officials have also warned about the growing use of faster, jet-powered Russian drones, which can create additional challenges for existing defensive systems.

Ukraine is simultaneously facing shortages of Patriot interceptor missiles, which are among its most important systems for defending against ballistic missile attacks.

President Zelenskyy has repeatedly appealed to Western countries for additional air-defence systems and interceptor missiles as Russian missile and drone attacks intensify. Recent reports indicate that Ukraine has received only a small proportion of the Patriot capability it says it needs.

Russia-Ukraine Attacks Intensify

The latest strike is part of a broader escalation in long-range attacks between Russia and Ukraine.

Russia has continued targeting Ukrainian infrastructure, industrial facilities and logistics networks with missiles and drones. Ukraine has also expanded its own long-range drone campaign against Russian military and economic targets.

A major Russian air assault earlier this week targeted infrastructure and commercial facilities around Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, while Ukrainian forces have carried out retaliatory attacks against Russian industrial and logistics sites.

The latest developments have increased concerns that the continued drone campaign could further stretch Ukraine's air-defence resources and leave the country more vulnerable to future large-scale missile attacks.
