Russia is reportedly supplying Iran with explosives, ammunition and drone components through the Caspian Sea as Tehran attempts to rebuild military stockpiles damaged during its conflict with the United States and Israel.
According to an NBC News report published this week, a European government document identified shipments containing TNT, ammunition and components for drones. The assessment, reportedly verified by a Western official, also indicated that some of the material could potentially support Iran's ballistic-missile production capabilities.
The reported transfers highlight the growing Russia-Iran military relationship and the strategic importance of the Caspian Sea as a transportation corridor between the two countries.

Caspian Sea Emerges as Key Russia-Iran Supply Route
The Caspian Sea provides a direct maritime connection between Russia and Iran. It is bordered by five countries — Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.
The route is particularly significant because Western naval forces do not maintain a permanent military presence in the Caspian Sea. Reports have suggested that this geographic advantage makes the movement of military-related cargo more difficult for Western powers to monitor or intercept.
Recent reporting has also indicated that more than two dozen ships have travelled along Caspian shipping routes as part of efforts to replenish Iranian military stocks.
Iran's Military Arsenal Damaged During US-Israel Conflict
Iran's military infrastructure and weapons inventory have suffered significant losses during its recent confrontation with the United States and Israel.
The reported Russian shipments could therefore help Tehran restore some of its depleted stocks of ammunition, drone components and other military materials.

Iran Previously Supplied Shahed Drones to Russia

Iran previously supplied Russia with Shahed drones during the Ukraine war. Russia subsequently expanded domestic production of Shahed-type drones, while Iranian technology and components became part of the broader Russia-Iran defence relationship.
The latest reports indicate a potential shift in that relationship, with Moscow now allegedly assisting Tehran in replenishing parts of its military inventory.
China Also Reportedly Supporting Iran's Military Rebuilding
Russia is not the only major power linked to Iran's military rebuilding efforts.
Reuters reported in July that Iran was expected to receive Chinese-made shoulder-fired air-defence missile systems as Tehran worked to restore its defences following the war with the United States. The reported deal involved hundreds of QW-12 and FN-16 launchers, although China denied the report.
Other assessments have also pointed to Chinese assistance involving military technology and components connected to Iran's drone and missile capabilities.
Moscow Denies Reports of Military Assistance
Russia and Iran have not publicly confirmed the details of the alleged shipments.
Moscow has previously rejected claims that it is providing Iran with military equipment beyond its officially acknowledged defence cooperation.
The latest allegations have nevertheless drawn attention from Western security agencies because of their potential impact on the balance of power in West Asia.
