ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih steel plant in Ukraine during the night of August 15–16, killing two people and injuring 13 employees and workers from contractor companies, according to reports from the company and Ukrainian authorities. The attack also damaged critical production infrastructure and forced a partial suspension of operations at Ukraine’s largest steel plant.
The facility is owned by ArcelorMittal, the global steel major associated with Indian-born billionaire Lakshmi Mittal. The attack damaged important components connected to the plant’s energy system and blast-furnace operations, affecting sections of its production process.
Russian Missile Attack Damages Ukraine’s Largest Steel Plant
ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is a major mining and metallurgical complex in central Ukraine. Following the missile strike, emergency responders and rescue teams were deployed as search, recovery and medical operations continued at the industrial site.
The company said specialists were assessing the damage and determining how quickly affected production facilities could be restored. Some manufacturing processes have been temporarily halted because of the strike.

Two Killed, 13 Injured in ArcelorMittal Plant Strike
The attack initially resulted in one reported death, but rescue teams later recovered another victim from the affected area, bringing the confirmed death toll to two.
Thirteen employees of ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih and workers employed by contractor organisations were also reported injured.
The incident occurred as Russia carried out another wave of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine, while Ukraine simultaneously launched a large-scale aerial offensive against targets inside Russia.
Blast Furnace and Power Infrastructure Hit
The missile attack caused damage to parts of the plant’s energy-generation infrastructure and blast-furnace production facilities.

These systems are essential to the integrated steelmaking process, meaning damage to them can affect multiple stages of industrial production. The company has therefore suspended some operations while technical teams examine the facility and work on restoration plans.
ArcelorMittal Plant Was Also Attacked in 2022
This is not the first time the Kryvyi Rih steel complex has been targeted during the war.
In 2022, a Russian missile strike damaged and destroyed part of a rolling-mill facility at the plant. One worker was killed in that earlier attack.
The repeated attacks underline the strategic importance of the Kryvyi Rih industrial region, which contains major mining and steelmaking facilities.
