Efforts to strengthen Sanskrit education in Tripura received fresh momentum after Dr. Bulti Das, Assistant Professor of Sanskrit at National Sanskrit University held an extensive discussion with Tripura Higher Education Department minister Kishore Burman on Tuesday.
The meeting focused on expanding Sanskrit language education across the state and exploring new opportunities for integrating the ancient language into Tripura’s higher education system. The discussion comes at a time when policymakers and academics are increasingly examining the future role of Sanskrit in education, research, and emerging technology sectors.
Dr. Das recently drew attention on social media to several issues concerning the present condition of Sanskrit education in Tripura. Her observations highlighted challenges faced by students and institutions while also outlining opportunities for growth. Taking note of these suggestions, Education Minister Kishore Burman invited the scholar for a detailed consultation.
During the meeting, Dr. Das proposed introducing Sanskrit as an academic subject in government schools throughout Tripura and gradually expanding Sanskrit programmes in colleges and universities. She emphasized that students pursuing Sanskrit studies can benefit from a growing range of career opportunities in the years ahead.
According to Dr. Das, Sanskrit is no longer confined to traditional academic disciplines. The language is increasingly being connected with modern fields such as artificial intelligence, computational linguistics, digital marketing, language technology, and computer science. He noted that several technology-driven organizations are seeking professionals with expertise in Sanskrit for specialized research and language-processing applications.
The discussion also covered reforms in recruitment and examination procedures related to Sanskrit education. Dr. Das recommended that Sanskrit examinations be conducted entirely in Sanskrit, including both question papers and answer scripts, to strengthen language proficiency and academic standards.
Another important issue raised during the meeting was the effective utilization of Central Government schemes and financial assistance available for Sanskrit promotion (Sanskrit Promotion Resources) and development. Dr. Das urged the state government to maximize the benefits of these programmes to enhance educational infrastructure and academic opportunities.
Following the meeting, Higher Education Minister Kishore Burman described the recommendations as valuable and constructive. He instructed officials concerned to examine the proposals carefully and consider suitable measures for implementation.
The minister stated that meaningful participation from educators, scholars, and citizens plays a vital role in improving the education system and preserving the state's linguistic and cultural heritage. He added that constructive criticism based on facts and aimed at development is always welcomed by the government.
Officials from the Higher Education Department are expected to review the recommendations discussed during the meeting and initiate appropriate follow-up actions in the coming weeks.
