Sarma Predicts Strong NDA Mandate in Assam

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said that the voter turnout in the ongoing Assembly elections reflected broad-based participation across communities, with overall polling expected to reach 86 to 87 percent.

Speaking to reporters, Sarma noted that in previous elections, sections of the Muslim community of Bangladeshi origin had recorded turnout levels as high as 95 to 96 percent, while participation among other sections of Assamese society generally ranged between 75 and 76 percent.

He observed that the current election witnessed a more balanced pattern of voting, with strong participation from all communities. According to the Chief Minister, groups that traditionally demonstrated high electoral engagement continued to vote in large numbers, while those with comparatively lower turnout in the past also showed increased enthusiasm.

Sarma cautioned that it would be premature to predict the final outcome of the elections. However, he expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) could secure a decisive mandate.

He further indicated that crossing the triple-digit mark in the 126-member Assam Assembly would not be unexpected, signaling optimism within the ruling alliance.
