Satellite Images Raise Weather Concerns: Monsoon Clouds Vanish From Large Parts of India

IMD Weather Forecast: Delayed Monsoon Progress Raises Concerns in Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Bihar, UP and Delhi

The southwest monsoon (Monsoon Updates) has temporarily lost momentum across India, resulting in a significant rainfall shortfall and delaying widespread showers in several states. According to the India Meteorological Department  (IMD), the country received only 19.2 mm of rainfall between June 4 and June 15 against the normal average of 53.7 mm, leaving India with a massive 64 percent rainfall deficit.

Latest satellite imagery released on June 15 shows reduced monsoon cloud activity over large parts of the country, indicating a temporary pause in the monsoon's advance.

The slowdown has affected at least 16 states, including Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Jharkhand and West Bengal, where people continue to wait for substantial rainfall.

After making steady progress through southern India, the monsoon has stalled over Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. In eastern India, the system has also paused over Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal after covering the northeastern states.

Meteorologists say the delay is not linked to a shortage of moisture over the Arabian Sea or Bay of Bengal. Instead, unusual upper-atmospheric wind patterns and a southward shift of the western jet stream have disrupted the normal monsoon circulation.

Despite abundant moisture over surrounding seas, cloud formation remains weak in many regions, slowing the further advance of the monsoon. However, weather experts expect the system to regain strength and move forward during the coming days.

IMD Weather Forecast for June 16

Rain is likely over Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Sikkim. Strong winds reaching 50-70 kmph may affect several districts of Bihar.

Heavy rainfall is expected in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and parts of Karnataka.

Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of 40-60 kmph are forecast for Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and the Vidarbha region.

IMD Weather Forecast for June 17

Heavy rain is likely in Sikkim, North Bengal, Assam and Meghalaya.

Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh may witness rain accompanied by strong winds ranging from 40-60 kmph.

Thunderstorms with lightning activity are expected across parts of Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal.

Rainfall activity may continue over sections of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Heatwave Alert in Maharashtra

While many states await monsoon showers, parts of Maharashtra continue to battle intense heat. The IMD has warned that heatwave conditions are likely to persist in Marathwada until June 17 and in Vidarbha until June 16.

Meanwhile, Konkan and Goa are expected to experience hot and humid weather conditions through June 17. Several areas may also witness unusually warm nights, adding to weather-related discomfort.

Weather experts remain optimistic that the southwest monsoon will regain momentum soon, bringing much-needed rainfall to drought-prone regions and helping improve agricultural prospects across the country.
