SC Reviews Ban on Women Entry at Sabarimala

A nine-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court of India on Tuesday held an extensive five-hour hearing on the opening day of proceedings to determine whether its earlier ruling permitting the entry of women of menstruating age into the Sabarimala Temple should continue to remain in force.

Justice Nagarathna said-

I am at a loss to understand how to argue against Article 17, the right against untouchability, in this case. As a woman, I would like to say that it is impossible that women are considered "untouchable" for three days every month, and then suddenly, on the fourth day, there is no "untouchability

During the deliberations, the central government’s position also came under focus, as it had previously backed restrictions on the entry of women of menstrual age—a stance that remains central to the ongoing constitutional and religious debate.
