Severe Heatwave Grips North, West and Central India; Monsoon Still Delayed Near Kerala

India continues to witness extreme summer conditions as a prolonged heatwave affects several states across North, West and Central India. States including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Telangana are experiencing intense heatwave conditions.

The worst-hit regions include Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, where temperatures remain dangerously high.

According to the India Meteorological Department Official Website, Banda in Uttar Pradesh and Brahmapuri in Vidarbha remained the hottest places in the country on Monday, recording temperatures above 47°C for the eighth consecutive day.

Khajuraho in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh recorded a maximum temperature of 47.2°C, while Naugaon registered 46.8°C.

Punjab Revises School and Office Timings Amid Heatwave

Amid worsening heatwave conditions, the government of Punjab has revised the timings of schools and government offices. Educational institutions and offices will now function from 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM to reduce exposure to extreme afternoon temperatures.

Authorities in Chandigarh have also banned outdoor activities in school summer camps due to the severe heat.

Southwest Monsoon Yet to Officially Enter Kerala

The southwest monsoon has remained stalled nearly 30-35 km off the coast of Kerala over the past three days. Rainfall activity has increased across coastal areas of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, but weather experts say all atmospheric conditions required for the monsoon’s official onset are yet to be fulfilled.

IMD Weather Forecast for May 27

  • Heatwave conditions are likely in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Maharashtra.
  • Heavy rainfall alerts have been issued for Bihar, Kerala, Assam and Meghalaya, accompanied by strong winds reaching 50-60 kmph.
  • Thunderstorms and lightning with gusty winds are expected in Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Telangana and Odisha.

IMD Weather Forecast for May 28

  • Heatwave alerts remain active for Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Odisha, Punjab, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh.
  • Severe heatwave conditions are expected to continue in parts of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
  • Thunderstorm and hailstorm alerts have been issued for Haryana, Chandigarh-Delhi, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
  • Strong winds up to 60 kmph may affect several states including West Bengal, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
