Six Tripura Girls Rescued Near Nepal Border, Two Arrested

Six girls from Tripura have been rescued from Panitanki in West Bengal, close to the India-Nepal border, in a suspected human trafficking case. The rescued group includes four minors and two adult women, who were allegedly being taken towards Nepal after being promised employment at a dance bar.

The incident came to light when the girls were intercepted during a border check at Panitanki. Authorities reportedly found that the two men accompanying them could not provide a satisfactory explanation for taking the girls across the international border.

During counselling, the girls reportedly told officials that they had been offered work as dancers in Nepal. However, they allegedly had limited information about the proposed workplace, their destination and the duration of their stay, raising concerns that they could be vulnerable to trafficking.

Two Suspected Traffickers Arrested

Two men accompanying the girls have been arrested in connection with the suspected trafficking attempt. Investigators are questioning them to establish how the girls were recruited and whether other people were involved in arranging their movement from Tripura towards Nepal.

Officials are also examining the circumstances surrounding the four minors, including how they came into contact with the suspected trafficking network and who allegedly arranged their journey.

The rescued girls were handed over to authorities for further counselling and necessary procedures. Officials are working to reunite them with their families while continuing the investigation into the suspected cross-border trafficking network.

Tripura Girls Trafficking Case Raises Border Security Concerns

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over the use of job offers and dance-performance opportunities to lure young women towards the India-Nepal border. Authorities are investigating whether the case forms part of a wider human trafficking network operating across state and international borders.
