Sourav Ganguly Inducted into ICC Hall of Fame, Joins Indian Cricket's Greatest Icons

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has added another glorious chapter to his legendary cricket career after being inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, one of the highest honours in international cricket. The recognition comes as a tribute to his extraordinary contribution as a player, captain and cricket administrator. Ganguly became the 12th Indian cricketer to receive the prestigious honour. 

Historic Recognition on a Memorable Occasion

The honour coincided with Ganguly's 54th birthday, making the celebration even more special. Adding to the excitement, the makers of his upcoming biographical film, "Dada – The Sourav Ganguly Story," unveiled its first-look poster featuring actor Rajkummar Rao recreating Ganguly's iconic Lord's balcony celebration after India's unforgettable victory in the 2002 NatWest Trophy final. Ganguly described the poster as the finest birthday gift he could have received.

The Captain Who Changed Indian Cricket

When Ganguly took charge of the Indian cricket team in 2000 following the match-fixing crisis, Indian cricket was searching for a fresh identity. His fearless leadership transformed the team into a confident and aggressive unit capable of challenging the world's strongest sides.

He played a crucial role in nurturing future superstars, including Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Mohammad Kaif and later Mahendra Singh Dhoni, helping build one of India's most successful cricket generations.

Major Achievements Under Ganguly's Leadership

During his tenure as captain, India achieved several historic milestones:

  • Shared the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy.
  • Finished runners-up in the 2003 ICC ODI World Cup.
  • Drew a memorable Test series in England.
  • Registered India's first-ever Test series victory in Pakistan in 2004.
  • Ended Australia's remarkable streak of 16 consecutive Test victories.

These achievements established Ganguly as one of India's most influential captains.

  • Tests: 113 matches, 7,212 runs, 16 centuries.
  • ODIs: 311 matches, 11,363 runs, 22 centuries.
  • International Wickets: 132.

Leadership Beyond the Playing Field

Following retirement, Ganguly continued serving Indian cricket in administration. He became President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) before returning to lead the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), continuing his contribution to the game's development.

With this recognition, Ganguly joins an exclusive list of Indian cricket legends honoured by the ICC Hall of Fame, including Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Virender Sehwag, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Bishan Singh Bedi, Vinoo Mankad, Diana Edulji and Neetu David.
