The India Meteorological Department has forecast that the southwest monsoon is likely to make its onset over Kerala by May 26 this year, several days ahead of its normal schedule.
According to the Meteorological Department, the forecast carries a possible variation of up to four days, depending on evolving atmospheric and climatic conditions over the Arabian Sea and surrounding regions.
The IMD stated that the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala is regarded as the official commencement of the monsoon season across the Indian mainland. The arrival of the monsoon typically marks the gradual withdrawal of scorching summer temperatures and dry weather conditions, bringing widespread rainfall and cooler conditions to several parts of the country.
Officials said that the monsoon’s progress over Kerala is closely monitored every year, as it serves as a crucial indicator for agriculture, water resources, and overall seasonal weather patterns in India.
Under normal circumstances, the southwest monsoon reaches Kerala around June 1 annually. However, meteorological indicators and prevailing weather patterns this year suggest that the monsoon may arrive earlier than usual.
An early onset of the monsoon is often considered beneficial for agricultural activities in many states, especially for the sowing of Kharif crops, although experts note that the overall performance and distribution of rainfall during the season remain equally important.
