Spain Beat France 2-0 to Reach FIFA World Cup 2026 Final After 16 Years

Spain produced a clinical display to defeat France 2-0 in the first semi-final of the FIFA World Cup 2026, securing a place in the final for the first time in 16 years. Goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro ensured La Roja advanced to only their second World Cup final, keeping alive hopes of winning a second global title after their historic triumph in 2010.

The Spanish side dominated key moments of the contest with disciplined defending, intelligent passing and efficient finishing, while France failed to break through despite enjoying periods of possession.

Oyarzabal Gives Spain the Perfect Start

Spain broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute after referee awarded a penalty when French defender Lucas Digne fouled rising star Lamine Yamal inside the penalty area.

Forward Mikel Oyarzabal stepped up confidently and fired the spot-kick into the bottom-right corner, giving Spain a deserved 1-0 advantage. The goal was his fifth of the FIFA World Cup 2026, further strengthening his impressive tournament campaign.

France attempted to respond before halftime but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against Spain's compact defensive structure.

Pedro Porro Ends France's Fightback

France returned after the interval with greater attacking intent, hoping to restore parity. However, Spain remained composed and punished their opponents on the counterattack.

In the 58th minute, Dani Olmo delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Pedro Porro, who calmly slotted the ball home to double Spain's lead.

The second goal effectively ended France's hopes of a comeback. Spain controlled possession for the remainder of the match, slowing the tempo and denying the French forwards any meaningful scoring chances.

Spain's Defence Keeps Mbappe Quiet

Much of the attention before the match centred on French captain Kylian Mbappé, who entered the semi-final in outstanding form. However, Spain's disciplined defence neutralised the star striker throughout the contest.

Mbappé was repeatedly caught offside, found little space in dangerous areas and received a yellow card during the second half, capping a frustrating evening for the French captain.

Spain's defensive organisation proved to be one of the decisive factors behind their memorable victory.

France Miss Historic Third Consecutive World Cup Final

The defeat ended France's dream of reaching a third straight FIFA World Cup final following their appearances in the 2018 and 2022 editions.

Didier Deschamps' side created few genuine opportunities and lacked the cutting edge required to break down Spain's resilient backline.

Spain Eye Second FIFA World Cup Title

The victory sends Spain into the FIFA World Cup final for the first time since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010, when they defeated the Netherlands 1-0 to become world champions.

Now, La Roja stand just one victory away from capturing their second FIFA World Cup crown. They will face the winner of the second semi-final in the championship match.
