The final sitting of the 10th session of the 13th Tripura Legislative Assembly turned confrontational on Monday after Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman sought to raise the controversy surrounding an alleged suicide note linked to former Tripura DGP Anurag Dhankar.
The dispute eventually resulted in Roy Barman being expelled from the Assembly for the day after a heated exchange with Speaker Rampada Jamatia.
DGP Suicide Note Issue Triggers Assembly Clash
The controversy unfolded when Roy Barman attempted to bring the alleged suicide note before the House and demanded a discussion on questions surrounding the document.
The Speaker did not permit the matter to be taken up, leading to a sharp verbal confrontation between the Congress MLA and the Chair.

Speaker Orders Sudip Roy Barman's Expulsion
The disagreement intensified after Roy Barman continued his protest against the Speaker's decision. The Chair objected to language allegedly used by the Congress legislator and treated the remarks as unparliamentary.
Speaker Rampada Jamatia subsequently directed that Roy Barman be removed from the House for the remainder of the day's proceedings, citing disruption of Assembly business.
According to reports, police personnel were later directed to remove the Congress MLA when he did not immediately leave the Assembly premises.
Congress, CPI(M) MLAs Protest in Assembly Well
The Speaker's ruling triggered an immediate Opposition demonstration.
Congress and CPI(M) legislators moved into the well of the House and protested against the decision. Opposition members demanded that the alleged suicide note issue be allowed to come up for discussion.
The protest disrupted normal proceedings and intensified the confrontation between the ruling benches and Opposition legislators.
The Opposition has maintained that the alleged suicide note is a matter of public importance and has sought greater clarity regarding its whereabouts and handling.
Opposition Demands Discussion on Alleged Suicide Note
Roy Barman has raised questions about why the alleged suicide note has not been made public. Reports said he referred in the Assembly to claims by Dhankar's wife regarding the document and alleged that the original note had been removed or concealed.
The Speaker, however, maintained that the matter was already under investigation and that the House should follow established parliamentary procedure.
The dispute has therefore developed into a broader political confrontation over transparency, Assembly procedure and the handling of information connected with the former DGP's death.
DGP Dhankar Death Becomes Political Flashpoint
The latest confrontation adds another major political flashpoint to the Tripura Assembly session.
Chief Minister and Home Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha had earlier addressed the Assembly regarding the death of former DGP Anurag Dhankar during the ongoing session.
With the Opposition continuing to demand discussion on the alleged suicide note, the issue is likely to remain politically significant in Tripura in the days ahead.
The expulsion of Sudip Roy Barman and the subsequent Opposition protest have further sharpened the divide between the government and Opposition inside the Tripura Legislative Assembly.
Sudip Roy Barman Questions Missing Suicide Note
Speaking to reporters after the Assembly proceedings, Roy Barman alleged that the alleged suicide note had initially been reported to be on Anurag Dhankar’s table, but later could not be located.
He further claimed that the document was subsequently said to have been recovered from the pocket of the deceased DGP’s uniform when his belongings were handed over to his wife.
The Congress MLA questioned how such an important document could allegedly change locations and demanded clarity over its handling and preservation.
Congress MLA Seeks Transparent DGP Death Investigation
Roy Barman said the circumstances surrounding Dhankar’s death require a thorough and impartial investigation. He argued that even if the death has officially been classified as suicide, investigators should establish what circumstances led the senior police officer to take such an extreme step.
Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha had told the Assembly on August 28 that the death was suicidal in nature, citing the post-mortem findings.
Roy Barman, however, continued to demand answers regarding the alleged suicide note and the circumstances surrounding its handling.
Sudip Questions Manik Saha’s Response
The Congress MLA also questioned Chief Minister Manik Saha’s response to his allegations in the Assembly. Roy Barman claimed that his statements were not directly rejected as false and said he was prepared to resign as an MLA if his allegations were proven wrong.
He further questioned whether the Chief Minister had been aware of the alleged suicide note and called for accountability if any important evidence had been mishandled.
Opposition Protests in Tripura Assembly
The dispute over the alleged suicide note caused repeated disruptions inside the Assembly. Speaker Rampada Jamatia stopped Roy Barman from pursuing the matter in the manner he attempted, while Opposition MLAs protested over the decision.
The confrontation eventually resulted in Roy Barman’s expulsion for the day, followed by an Opposition walkout.
Demand for Independent and Impartial Probe
Roy Barman alleged that political influence in an investigation involving a senior police officer would raise serious concerns about transparency and public confidence.
He demanded that the authenticity and handling of the alleged suicide note, along with the circumstances of Anurag Dhankar’s death, be examined independently.
The Congress MLA also said he would seek the attention of the BJP’s central leadership over the matter and demanded political accountability.
The controversy has now emerged as a major political flashpoint in Tripura, with the Opposition seeking greater transparency while the government maintains that the issue has already been addressed in the Assembly
