TIPRA MLA Ranjit Debbarma Urges Amit Shah To Implement NRC, ILP In Tripura Over Illegal Migration Concerns

Amid growing concerns over illegal migration in Tripura, TIPRA Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma has submitted a detailed memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging the Centre to take immediate and strict measures to identify, detain, and deport illegal migrants allegedly residing in the state.

The six-page memorandum highlights critical issues related to illegal migration in Tripura, including border security, demographic changes, citizenship verification, and national security concerns. The BJP legislator stressed that the matter requires urgent intervention from both the Central Government and the Tripura Government.

Tripura-Bangladesh Border Under Scanner

In the memorandum, Ranjit Debbarma pointed out that Tripura shares an 856-kilometre-long international border with Bangladesh, making the northeastern state vulnerable to illegal infiltration for several decades.

He alleged that many illegal migrants have fraudulently obtained Indian identity documents such as Aadhaar cards, voter ID cards, ration cards, PAN cards, driving licences, and passports, making it increasingly difficult for authorities to identify infiltrators.

The TIPRA Motha MLA claimed that illegal migration has become a major challenge for Tripura’s administrative and social structure.

Demographic Change And Security Concerns In Tripura

Debbarma argued that unchecked infiltration has contributed to demographic changes in Tripura and created pressure on land ownership, employment opportunities, education, and healthcare services.

He also expressed concern over rising trans-border crimes and alleged that some infiltrators may be using Tripura as a transit corridor to enter other parts of India, posing a serious national security threat.

BJP MLA Demands NRC And ILP In Tripura

A major demand raised in the memorandum is the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in Tripura. According to Debbarma, ILP in Tripura would help regulate the movement of outsiders and strengthen monitoring mechanisms against illegal infiltration.

The TIPRA Motha MLA also demanded:

Implementation of NRC in Tripura
Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls
Strict enforcement of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019
Stronger border surveillance along the India-Bangladesh border

He maintained that these measures are necessary to protect Tripura’s demographic balance and cultural identity.

Memorandum Submitted To Multiple Authorities

Debbarma informed Amit Shah that he has consistently raised the issue of illegal migration in Tripura through public awareness campaigns, rallies, meetings, and written representations.

According to the memorandum, he had earlier approached:

Governor of Tripura
Chief Minister of Tripura
Home Secretary
Director General of Police (DGP)
Border Security Force (BSF)
Assam Rifles
District Magistrates
Superintendents of Police

The MLA expressed dissatisfaction over what he described as inadequate action by the state administration despite repeated appeals.

Amit Shah Office Acknowledges Representation

The memorandum also referred to communications received from the Ministry of Home Affairs. Debbarma stated that the office of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and officials from the Foreigners Division acknowledged his representation and forwarded the issue to relevant authorities for examination and necessary action.

The Motha legislator further cited media reports regarding alleged illegal voters in Tripura and informed that he had approached the Election Commission of India and the Chief Electoral Officer of Tripura seeking verification of electoral rolls.

Hope Over High-Powered Committee On Illegal Migration

Welcoming reports about the formation of a high-powered committee to examine illegal migration-related issues, Debbarma expressed hope that the Centre would take decisive steps to strengthen Tripura border security and safeguard the state’s demographic and cultural interests.

Ranjit Debbarma Seeks Meeting With Amit Shah During Tripura Visit

In his appeal, the TIPRA Motha MLA requested an opportunity to personally meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his proposed Tripura visit on June 5, 2026.

Debbarma said he intends to submit supporting documents and discuss the implementation of NRC, ILP, SIR, and CAA provisions in Tripura.

He maintained that such initiatives would strengthen national security, preserve India’s sovereignty, and address the long-standing issue of illegal migration in Tripura.
