TMC in Crisis: Sushmita Dev Resigns as Revolt Against Mamata Banerjee Intensifies

The All India Trinamool Congress is facing one of the biggest political crises in its history as senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP from Assam  Sushmita Dev  resigned from both the party and the Upper House of Parliament on Wednesday. Her resignation was accepted by Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan, further deepening the turmoil within the Mamata Banerjee-led party.

The latest development comes just days after former TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Shekhar Roy also quit the party and resigned from Parliament. With two Rajya Sabha members stepping down within three days, the internal rebellion within the TMC appears to be gaining momentum.

Political tensions escalated further after reports emerged that 20 of the party's 28 Lok Sabha MPs have extended support to the NDA government at the Centre. Former TMC leader Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar revealed that a letter signed by the MPs was submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking recognition as a separate parliamentary group along with independent seating arrangements in Parliament.

The revolt within the party reportedly began on June 3 when 58 rebel MLAs formed a separate faction and elected expelled legislator Ritabrata Banerjee as their leader. The dissident camp submitted a letter to Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose requesting official recognition of Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition. The proposal was subsequently approved.

According to reports, the rebellion has significantly reduced the strength of the Trinamool Congress. Of its 28 Lok Sabha MPs, 20 have allegedly joined the breakaway group, while two of its 13 Rajya Sabha MPs have resigned. In the West Bengal Assembly, 58 of the party's 80 MLAs have aligned with the rebel camp.

Amid the political crisis, TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi. The meeting followed Mamata Banerjee's recent discussion with Sonia Gandhi in the national capital. Mamata later returned to Kolkata as speculation over the future of the party intensified.

Speaking after her resignation, Sushmita Dev said her decision was based on both personal and political considerations. She stated that since the party had nominated her to the Rajya Sabha, it was appropriate to relinquish the seat after leaving the organization.

When asked about the possibility of further resignations, Dev said she was not aware of the plans of other leaders and emphasized that she was not directly involved in West Bengal politics. Regarding her recent meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, she described it as a formal interaction and noted that they had maintained cordial relations since their Congress days.

Responding to speculation about joining the BJP, Sushmita Dev said she intends to spend some time with her family in Assam before making any future political decisions.

If the reported figures hold, Mamata Banerjee's strength in the Lok Sabha would be reduced to eight MPs, while the party's Rajya Sabha tally would stand at 11 members. In the West Bengal Assembly, only 22 MLAs would remain with the original TMC faction.

The developments mark a significant challenge for the Trinamool Congress and could have far-reaching implications for West Bengal politics ahead of future electoral battles.
