In a significant political development ahead of crucial electoral battles, senior Trinamool Congress (aitcofficial) leader Sukhendu Sekhar Ray resigned from his Rajya Sabha membership and severed ties with the Mamata Banerjee-led party on Monday.
Announcing his decision, Ray launched a sharp attack on the Trinamool Congress leadership, holding the state government's 15-year tenure responsible for growing public dissatisfaction. He also praised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), fueling speculation about a possible political realignment in West Bengal.
The resignation comes amid reports of growing unrest within the ruling TMC. After facing setbacks among legislators, the party is now witnessing increasing uncertainty among its parliamentary ranks. Sources indicated that 21 Members of Parliament met at the residence of Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav in New Delhi to discuss the evolving political situation.
Among those reportedly attending the meeting were senior Bengal political figures Suvendu Adhikari and Sukhendu Sekhar Ray. Photographs from the gathering later surfaced online, showing several prominent leaders, including Sharmila Sarkar, Prasun Banerjee, Kalipada Soren, Jagdish Basunia, and Arup Chakraborty.
The Trinamool Congress currently holds 28 seats in the Lok Sabha and 13 seats in the Rajya Sabha. Political observers note that recent developments have intensified concerns for the party, with reports suggesting that a large section of West Bengal legislators has formed a separate grouping.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders assembled in New Delhi for the seventh INDIA Bloc coordination meeting. Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge were joined by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The high-profile gathering also witnessed the participation of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule, and several other opposition representatives. Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray attended the meeting virtually.
According to Congress sources, representatives from 23 opposition parties are participating in the INDIA Bloc meeting. Speculation regarding the inclusion of TVK was dismissed after sources clarified that the party had not received an invitation.
Notably, this is the first full-scale INDIA Bloc meeting since June 1, 2024, when alliance leaders last met at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi.
Speaking from Baramati in Maharashtra, NCP-SCP chief Sharad Pawar emphasized the importance of maintaining unity among all alliance partners, describing cohesion within the opposition camp as essential in the current political environment.
