All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) MP Abhishek Banerjee has alleged that he was attacked by BJP supporters during a visit to Sonarpur South in West Bengal on Saturday evening. The incident occurred when the TMC national general secretary arrived in the area to meet party workers and families allegedly affected by post-election political violence in South 24 Parganas district.
BJP Workers Allegedly Gheraoed Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur
According to allegations made by the TMC leadership, a group of BJP workers surrounded Abhishek Banerjee shortly after he reached Sonarpur. The protesters allegedly raised slogans against the TMC leader and created a tense political atmosphere in the area.
The situation reportedly escalated when stones, eggs and shoes were allegedly thrown at Banerjee. During the confrontation, his shirt was reportedly torn. Visuals circulating on social media showed security personnel escorting the TMC MP away from the spot while he was wearing a protective helmet.
Abhishek Banerjee Calls Attack a Pre-Planned Conspiracy
Reacting to the alleged attack, Abhishek Banerjee claimed that the incident was a pre-planned conspiracy aimed at physically harming him. He also alleged that there was inadequate police deployment despite Sonarpur being a politically sensitive region.
“Look what they have done to me. This attack was pre-planned. There were no police personnel present. They wanted to kill me. The helmet saved my head from serious injury. We will not be intimidated by such attacks,” Banerjee told reporters.
The TMC MP further stated that the entire incident had been captured on camera and announced that he would seek legal action regarding the matter.
TMC MP to Approach Calcutta High Court and Governor
Abhishek Banerjee said he would approach the Calcutta High Court over the alleged attack and would also bring the matter to the attention of the Governor of West Bengal.
He further asserted that he would not leave Sonarpur until adequate police protection was provided to the families allegedly affected by post-election violence.
“I will remain here until local police forces are deployed and security is guaranteed for the victims' families,” Banerjee said.
Sonarpur Remains a Political Flashpoint in West Bengal
Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district has long been considered one of West Bengal's politically volatile regions. The area has witnessed repeated clashes and allegations of violence involving both the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party during and after elections.
Political tensions have remained high following the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, with both parties accusing each other of intimidation and violence.
BJP Worker Earlier Alleged Arson Attack in Sonarpur
In May 2026, BJP worker Soumen Das alleged that his house in the Kamarabad Naskarpada area of Sonarpur was set on fire after he was threatened by local TMC supporters. The Trinamool Congress denied the allegations.
The incident further intensified political tensions in the constituency, which remains one of the state's closely watched political battlegrounds.
BJP MLA Rupa Ganguly Represents Sonarpur South
Sonarpur South is currently represented by BJP MLA Rupa Ganguly, who won the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election by defeating TMC candidate Arundhati Maitra, popularly known as Lovely Maitra.
The constituency witnessed a fierce electoral contest between the BJP and the TMC, reflecting the broader political rivalry across West Bengal.
CID Summons Abhishek Banerjee in Alleged Forged Signature Case
The controversy surrounding Abhishek Banerjee deepened on Saturday after he received a summons from the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with an alleged forged signature case.
According to reports, CID officials visited Banerjee's Kalighat residence in Kolkata and served him a formal notice. He has been directed to appear before investigators at Bhavani Bhavan, the CID headquarters, on Monday at 12 noon.

Political Tensions Expected to Escalate Further
