TMC Split News: Rebel MPs Claim Merger With Tripura-Based NCPI, Extend Support To NDA

A major political controversy has erupted after a group of dissident Members of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) claimed that they have broken away from the party and merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), a Tripura-based political organization.

The announcement was made on Sunday by rebel faction leader Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, who stated that a formal letter regarding the split had been submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. According to her, the breakaway group will cooperate with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The development, if recognized officially, could significantly alter the political landscape in West Bengal and impact the strength of the Trinamool Congress in Parliament.

Rebel MPs Claim Support Of Two-Thirds Of TMC Parliamentary Strength

According to the dissident camp, more than two-thirds of the party's MPs are backing the new formation. Senior MPs Sudip Bandyopadhyay and Shatabdi Roy reportedly supported the move and stated that their faction has already joined the NCPI.

Photographs from the meeting with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla reportedly showed 17 MPs associated with the rebel camp. Before approaching the Speaker, the lawmakers also met Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav, who is in charge of BJP affairs in West Bengal.

Separate Seating Demand In Parliament

The rebel legislators have reportedly sought separate seating arrangements in Parliament, signaling their intention to function independently of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress.

Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar further stated that the NCPI-backed faction would support NDA initiatives at the national level.

Mamata Banerjee Camp Opposes Recognition Of Rebel Group

Meanwhile, the faction loyal to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reportedly written to the Lok Sabha Speaker urging him not to recognize the dissident group as a separate parliamentary entity.

The dispute is expected to trigger legal and constitutional questions regarding party ownership, legislative recognition, and parliamentary privileges.

Battle Over TMC Identity And Election Symbol

Senior MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay indicated that the issue of which faction represents the "real" Trinamool Congress may ultimately be decided through legal proceedings. He also claimed that the breakaway camp intends to seek rights over the party's iconic twin-flower election symbol.

Political observers believe that any decision regarding party identity and symbol ownership would involve the Election Commission of India and, potentially, the courts.
