Tripura BJP councillor death sparks political storm

Rahul Kishore Roy, a prominent BJP youth leader and councillor from North Tripura, was found dead in a sudden and unexplained incident that has sent shockwaves across the region’s political landscape. The development prompted Chief Minister Manik Saha to express deep condolences and order a thorough, impartial investigation.

Roy held key organizational and elected roles—serving as Mandal president of Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha and as councillor of Ward No. 5 under the Dharmanagar Municipal Council. He was discovered lifeless inside the bathroom of his residence under circumstances that remain unclear. Notably, a saffron party scarf was reportedly found tied around his neck, intensifying speculation over whether the death was a case of suicide or involved foul play.

In his official message, the Chief Minister conveyed “deep grief at the untimely demise” of the young leader and assured the bereaved family that all allegations—particularly those raised by Roy’s wife—would be examined with full neutrality. He emphasized that justice and transparency would guide the investigation, and that appropriate legal action would be taken based on the findings.

The tragedy has taken a more contentious turn following serious allegations from the family. Roy’s wife claimed that a group of BJP youth leaders had attempted to attack him twice on the eve of the Dharmanagar by-election results, accusing him of working against the party’s candidate. The alleged incidents reportedly occurred at a time when the town was witnessing victory celebrations, further fueling suspicions of internal factional rivalry within the party.

Residents and local observers note that the image associated with Roy’s death—particularly the party scarf around his neck—has stirred strong public emotion and intensified debate over intra-party conflict and political pressures at the grassroots level.

Police have initiated an investigation into the case, but the situation in Dharmanagar remains tense. The incident has rapidly evolved into a major flashpoint in Tripura’s political discourse, raising urgent questions about party unity, the safety and security of political workers, and accountability within organizational structures.
