Tripura Congress Demands Action Against CRPF Officer Over Alleged Lathi Charge During NEET Protest

The Tripura Congress has demanded strict disciplinary action against a CRPF Assistant Commandant accused of using excessive force and allegedly making offensive remarks against Youth Congress activists, including women participants, during a protest over the 
NEET  issue in Agartala.

A high-level Congress delegation comprising Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President Asish Kumar Saha, senior MLA Sudip Roy Barman and Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress President Neel Kamal Saha met the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Monday and submitted a formal complaint along with supporting evidence.

NEET Protest in Agartala Sparks Political Controversy

The controversy erupted after the Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress organized a demonstration in Agartala demanding accountability over NEET-related issues. During the protest, security personnel allegedly resorted to a lathi charge on demonstrators.

A video that surfaced on social media and quickly went viral allegedly showed CRPF Assistant Commandant Ram Kumar using objectionable language while interacting with Youth Congress activists. The incident has triggered widespread criticism from Congress leaders.

Sudip Roy Barman Alleges Unprovoked Use of Force

Addressing the media after the meeting, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman alleged that the protesters were peaceful and had not engaged in any activity that warranted police action.

According to him, the use of force left several Youth Congress workers injured. He claimed that the incident reflected an attempt to suppress democratic voices and intimidate young political activists raising public concerns.

Congress Condemns Alleged Remarks Against Women Protesters

Roy Barman strongly criticized the alleged language used by the CRPF officer, particularly against women activists participating in the demonstration.

He said that while political workers often face hardships during movements, disrespectful and abusive remarks directed at women cannot be accepted under any circumstances. The Congress leader described the incident as an insult to women and demanded immediate corrective action.

Complaint Submitted at CRPF Headquarters in Shalbagan

The Congress delegation visited the CRPF headquarters in Shalbagan and submitted a detailed representation to the DIG. The leaders reportedly furnished documents, video evidence and eyewitness accounts related to the incident.

While reaffirming the party’s respect for the CRPF as a national security force, Roy Barman maintained that any officer found guilty of misconduct should face disciplinary proceedings.

FIR Filed Against Assistant Commandant Ram Kumar

The Congress leader also confirmed that an FIR has been lodged against Assistant Commandant Ram Kumar. He questioned the legality of the lathi charge, alleging that no formal authorization had been issued by the Additional Superintendent of Police or the local Officer-in-Charge before force was used.

Roy Barman claimed that the action was intended to create fear among protesters and discourage youth participation in democratic movements. However, he asserted that the Congress would continue to raise public issues despite such challenges.

DIG Assures Appropriate Action

According to Congress leaders, the CRPF DIG assured the delegation that the allegations would be examined seriously and that appropriate action would be taken based on the outcome of the inquiry.

The incident has added a new dimension to the ongoing political debate in Tripura, with opposition parties demanding accountability and transparency regarding the handling of public protests.
