Tripura Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul will represent the state at the
69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference 2026 — in Cape Town, South Africa, marking a significant international engagement for the Tripura Legislative Assembly.
Paul has been included in India’s parliamentary delegation for the major Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) gathering, where lawmakers from Commonwealth nations will discuss parliamentary democracy, legislative practices and emerging challenges facing democratic institutions.
Ram Prasad Paul to Represent Tripura in South Africa
The selection of Tripura Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul places the northeastern state on the international parliamentary platform. His participation is expected to provide an opportunity to showcase Tripura’s legislative experience and democratic institutions before representatives from across the Commonwealth.
Paul attended the recent briefing meeting for India’s delegation in New Delhi along with presiding officers from several state legislatures. The meeting was chaired by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and focused on preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference.

India Prepares for 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference
The 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference 2026 will be hosted in Cape Town, South Africa by the Parliament of South Africa and the CPA South Africa Branch. According to the official CPA programme, the conference is scheduled from September 13 to September 19, 2026.
The conference will bring together parliamentary representatives from Commonwealth countries for discussions on democratic governance, parliamentary institutions and legislative cooperation.
The central theme and workshop programme will address issues including parliamentary democracy, international law, climate resilience, artificial intelligence in parliamentary systems, human rights, inclusion and legislative scrutiny.
Tripura Gets International Parliamentary Platform
For Tripura, Paul’s participation carries significance beyond the state’s representation in the Indian delegation. The visit will provide an international platform to highlight the functioning of democratic institutions and legislative processes in the state.
The Tripura Legislative Assembly has also remained involved in Commonwealth Parliamentary Association activities. Earlier this year, preparations were underway for the CPA Conference 2026 in Agartala, scheduled for November 26 and 27, which is expected to bring parliamentary representatives from the Northeastern states together.
Study Tour to Accompany Parliamentary Conference
Along with the main conference, members of the Indian delegation are expected to take part in a study programme intended to provide exposure to parliamentary institutions and procedures in South Africa.
The programme will allow Indian legislators and presiding officers to exchange experiences with their international counterparts and gain a broader understanding of parliamentary practices.
