Tripura Exports 18.7 MT Organic Rice to Europe for First Time

Tripura has achieved a major milestone in organic agriculture with the first-ever export of 18.7 metric tonnes of organic rice to the European market, opening a new avenue for the state’s farmers to access international buyers.
Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath flagged off the export consignment through Prathi Organic Foods Private Limited during an awareness programme on the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala on Wednesday.
Tripura Organic Rice Reaches European Market
The European-bound consignment contains four varieties of organic rice. The shipment includes 1.2 metric tonnes of Kalikhasa rice, 1.5 metric tonnes of sticky rice, 6 metric tonnes of black rice and 10 metric tonnes of Harinarayan rice.
The export marks an important development in Tripura’s efforts to connect its agricultural producers with international markets and increase the commercial potential of organic farming.
Ratan Lal Nath said the achievement demonstrates the growing potential of Tripura’s organic agriculture sector and could create additional market opportunities for farmers.
Organic Farming Gains Momentum in Tripura
According to the Agriculture Minister, Tripura has favourable conditions for organic cultivation because of its fertile soil, adequate rainfall and rich biodiversity.
Farmers in the state have traditionally relied on environmentally friendly agricultural methods, including crop rotation, mixed cultivation and organic manure. Natural pest-control practices involving neem-based preparations and biological methods have also supported soil health and biodiversity.
The government is now combining these traditional practices with modern organic certification systems to help Tripura’s agricultural products meet international requirements.
26,600 Hectares Under Organic Farming
Tripura has expanded the area associated with organic agriculture to approximately 26,600 hectares, according to the minister.
Of the total area, 14,411 hectares have been registered, while 2,002 hectares are undergoing conversion to organic farming. Another 10,189 hectares are under consideration.
The state has also established 53 Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) aimed at improving collective marketing, strengthening farmers’ bargaining power and providing better access to markets.
Queen Pineapple, Ginger and Chilli Gain Global Markets
Tripura’s organic agricultural products are increasingly finding buyers outside the state.
Products including Kalikhasa aromatic rice, ginger, scented lemon, bird’s eye chilli and GI-tagged Queen Pineapple have reached markets in several parts of India.

The state’s agricultural products have also gained access to overseas markets, including Germany, Dubai, Oman and Bangladesh, the minister said.
Farmers are also adopting organic cultivation for turmeric, mustard, sesame, foxtail millet and Queen and Kew varieties of pineapple.
Government Focuses on Organic Agriculture and Farmer Income
The Tripura government has identified organic agriculture as an important component of rural economic development.
Through targeted programmes, farmer training, certification assistance and market-linkage initiatives, authorities are encouraging cultivators to produce high-value agricultural commodities with demand in domestic and international markets.
The government is also working to strengthen Farmer Producer Organisations and Companies while developing closer links between farmers, exporters, institutions and overseas buyers.
Nath said the long-term objective is to establish Tripura as an important centre of organic agriculture in India and expand its presence in the international organic food market.
First European Export Opens New Opportunity for Tripura Farmers
The shipment of 18.7 metric tonnes of organic rice could provide further momentum to Tripura’s efforts to build a stronger agricultural export ecosystem.
With expanding organic farmland, farmer producer companies, certification support and growing overseas demand, the state is seeking to turn organic agriculture into an important source of rural income and sustainable economic growth.
The development comes after Tripura’s recent expansion of organic agriculture and efforts to establish direct connections between local producers and international buyers.
