Eight citizens who stepped forward to help road accident victims and ensured their timely transportation to hospitals were honoured by the Tripura Transport Department on Wednesday under the state’s Rah-Veer (Good Samaritan) initiative.
The award ceremony was held at the Civil Secretariat in Agartala, where each recipient received a ₹25,000 cash reward and a certificate in recognition of their humanitarian intervention.
The initiative aims to encourage ordinary citizens to assist injured people immediately after road accidents, particularly during the crucial period when rapid medical attention can make a significant difference. Tripura has been promoting public participation in road safety alongside measures involving the Transport, Police and Health departments.

Their recognition was linked to their efforts to assist people injured in road accidents and arrange prompt transportation to hospitals.
Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury Stresses Timely Help
Speaking at the programme, Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said the central objective of the Rah-Veer initiative is to encourage people to overcome hesitation and come forward when they witness a road accident.
He emphasised that taking an injured person to a hospital without unnecessary delay is an important form of civic responsibility and can help ensure access to medical treatment at the earliest possible stage.
The minister has previously highlighted the importance of public participation in road safety and assistance to accident victims. The state has also been implementing measures connected with Rah-Veer, PM-RAHAT and the Hit-and-Run Compensation Scheme.
Rah-Veer Scheme Encourages Public Assistance
The Rah-Veer scheme, earlier known as the Good Samaritan initiative, provides recognition and financial incentives to people who assist road accident victims and help them reach hospitals promptly.
According to information shared by the Transport Department, the reward in Tripura was increased to ₹25,000, with recognised helpers also receiving a certificate. The initiative is intended to encourage citizens to play an active role in emergency assistance rather than remain passive bystanders.
The broader road-safety strategy also places emphasis on reaching accident victims quickly. A 2025 Tripura government release highlighted the importance of getting victims to medical facilities during the “Golden Hour” following an accident.
Public Responsibility at the Centre of Road Safety
The felicitation programme underlined a wider message: road safety is not limited to enforcement agencies and government departments.

Citizens who happen to witness accidents can also play an important role by providing immediate assistance and helping victims access medical care.
Recent road-safety programmes in Tripura have similarly stressed coordination between the Transport Department, Traffic Police, Health Department, district administrations and the public.
The eight Rah-Veers were therefore recognised not simply for responding to individual emergencies, but for demonstrating the importance of humanitarian intervention, civic responsibility and timely assistance after road accidents.
Tripura Road Safety: Why Immediate Assistance Matters
Road accidents can require urgent medical intervention, particularly when victims suffer serious injuries. The Tripura government has been combining enforcement and awareness measures with schemes designed to facilitate assistance and treatment for accident victims.
Transport Department officials have repeatedly called for greater public awareness so that people know how to respond after accidents and how eligible victims can access government assistance.
The latest Rah-Veer awards are part of that broader effort to encourage a culture in which citizens are prepared to help injured people during emergencies.
For TheTripuraPost, the key takeaway is clear: saving a life after a road accident is not only the responsibility of police or medical personnel. Timely action by an ordinary citizen can also become a crucial link between an accident site and emergency medical care.
