The absence of a dedicated Special Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) notification in Tripura has left a large section of in-service teachers seeking clarity over the implementation of the Supreme Court's mandatory TET requirement.
The issue has gained renewed importance after the Supreme Court reaffirmed in 2026 that qualifying TET is mandatory for eligible in-service teachers and extended the compliance period to August 31, 2028. The court also directed authorities to conduct TET examinations periodically, preferably twice a year, giving teachers repeated opportunities to meet the prescribed qualification.
Supreme Court Makes TET Mandatory for Eligible In-Service Teachers
The Supreme Court's decision stems from its interpretation of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act and the constitutional objective of ensuring quality elementary education under Article 21A.
The court reaffirmed that eligible teachers already in service cannot treat TET as merely an optional qualification. Teachers with more than five years of service remaining were given a defined period to obtain the qualification, while TET remains essential for teachers seeking promotion.
In its subsequent review decision, the Supreme Court provided additional time and fixed August 31, 2028, as the extended deadline for obtaining TET qualification.
Tripura Teachers Seek Special TET Examination
Against this backdrop, teachers in Tripura are looking towards the state Education Department for a clear mechanism to complete the qualification process.

The demand is particularly focused on a Special TET for in-service teachers, accompanied by a formal notification, application schedule, syllabus, examination pattern and other necessary guidelines.
Teachers argue that a statewide examination cannot be organised overnight. The authorities would need to complete several administrative stages, including registration, scrutiny of applications, admit-card distribution, examination-centre allocation, conduct of the test and declaration of results.
Andhra Pradesh Moves Ahead With Special TET
The developments in Andhra Pradesh have further highlighted the contrast in administrative preparedness.
The Andhra Pradesh School Education Department issued a Special TET notification for in-service teachers on August 24, 2026. Applications are scheduled to be accepted from August 25 to September 24, while the computer-based examination is scheduled for October 11-21.
The move has provided serving teachers in Andhra Pradesh with a defined pathway to secure the required TET qualification.
For Tripura's teaching community, the Andhra Pradesh initiative has consequently strengthened calls for a similar state-level arrangement.
Why Tripura Teachers Want Immediate Clarity
Teachers in Tripura are not only seeking an examination date but also certainty over the implementation process.
A transparent notification would allow eligible teachers to understand:
- who can appear in the Special TET;
- the applicable syllabus and examination pattern;
- application and fee procedures;
- important dates;
- qualifying requirements;
- examination-centre arrangements; and
- the process for obtaining the TET certificate.
Such clarity would also enable teachers to prepare well before the Supreme Court's extended deadline.
Supreme Court Direction Calls for Regular TET Opportunities
The Supreme Court's direction for periodic examinations is particularly significant for serving teachers who may require more than one attempt.
The court indicated that TET examinations should preferably be organised twice every year, with an interval of around six months. This framework is intended to provide teachers with reasonable opportunities to obtain the qualification rather than leaving them dependent on a single examination cycle.
For Tripura, implementing a regular and predictable examination calendar could therefore become an important administrative step.
Quality Education and Teachers' Job Security
The TET issue involves two interconnected concerns: maintaining teaching standards and protecting the professional future of eligible in-service teachers.
The Supreme Court has placed the quality of children's education at the centre of the TET requirement. At the same time, the extended compliance period provides affected teachers additional time to meet the prescribed qualification.
Education-sector observers therefore believe that Tripura should establish a clear examination mechanism without unnecessary administrative uncertainty.
Tripura Education Department Under Pressure to Act
With other states beginning to establish special arrangements for in-service teachers, pressure is likely to increase on the Tripura Education Department to clarify its position.
The immediate requirement is not simply an announcement but a comprehensive implementation plan covering notification, applications, examination dates and results.
For thousands of serving teachers, the question now is whether Tripura will introduce a dedicated Special TET and regular examination schedule in line with the Supreme Court's directions.
The August 31, 2028 deadline provides additional time, but teachers say early administrative action is essential to prevent last-minute pressure and ensure a smooth transition to the new qualification framework.
