Tripura Landslide Tragedy: Two Dead, One Critically Injured In Teliamura Soil Collapse; Questions Raised Over Disaster Response

A devastating Tripura landslide in the Chakmaghat Muslim Colony area of Teliamura subdivision in Khowai District claimed the lives of two youths and left another critically injured on Saturday. The tragic Teliamura landslide accident has also sparked questions regarding the effectiveness of the local disaster response team(Fire & Emergency Services) in Tripura.
Three residents of Kunjmura village—James Jamatia (20), Asha Hari Jamatia (30), and Amulya Dhan Jamatia (30)—had reportedly travelled to the Chakmaghat area under Krishnapur Assembly Constituency to collect soil for house construction work. During excavation, a massive section of earth suddenly collapsed, trapping all three men beneath the debris in what has become one of the most serious soil collapse incidents in Tripura this year.
Eyewitnesses and local residents immediately rushed to the scene and began a rescue operation. Amulya Dhan Jamatia was pulled out alive but suffered severe leg injuries. He was first admitted to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital before being referred to GB Pant Hospital Agartala after his condition deteriorated.
The incident has triggered criticism of the administration's emergency response mechanism. Local residents alleged that while Tripura Fire Service personnel arrived promptly after receiving information about the accident, the sub-divisional disaster management team reached the location much later. Several eyewitnesses claimed that firefighters and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawans played the leading role in the rescue efforts.
Following an extensive search operation, rescuers recovered James Jamatia and Asha Hari Jamatia from beneath the collapsed soil. They were immediately transported to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors declared both victims dead. The tragic deaths have sent shockwaves across Teliamura and Khowai district.
After receiving information about the incident, personnel from Teliamura Police Station reached the hospital and completed legal formalities. The bodies were subsequently sent for post-mortem examinations as part of the investigation into the fatal Tripura landslide accident.
Later, Disaster Response Team officer Genius Debbarma visited the hospital and met family members of the deceased victims. However, he reportedly refrained from making any public statement regarding the allegations surrounding the rescue operation.
Meanwhile, Teliamura Sub-Divisional Magistrate Apurba Krishna Chakraborty stated that members of the disaster response team were awaiting the arrival of a JCB excavator before proceeding. However, local residents disputed this claim, asserting that the rescue operation had already begun and that firefighters and TSR personnel had rescued the trapped victims before heavy machinery arrived.
The tragic Chakmaghat landslide incident has reignited debate over disaster preparedness in Tripura, emergency rescue infrastructure, and administrative coordination during crises. Residents have demanded a thorough investigation and stronger safety measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
