Tripura LoP Expresses Regret Over 'Idiot' Remark Against SP

Leader of the Opposition in the Tripura Assembly and senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) – leader Jitendra Chaudhury on Thursday expressed regret for referring to South Tripura Superintendent of Police Mourya Krishna with an offensive term during a politically charged incident, admitting that the statement was made in anger and should not have been uttered.
His clarification came shortly after the Tripura chapter of the All India Services Association (AISA) strongly criticised the remark and sought an unconditional public apology from the veteran Left leader.
CPI(M) Leader Explains Circumstances Behind the Controversial Remark
Speaking to journalists, Chaudhury said his reaction followed an alleged attack on CPI(M) workers during a memorial programme held in South Tripura. According to him, the event had received official permission and was organised to observe the second death anniversary of party worker Badal Shil.

He stated that emotions overtook him after learning that party workers were allegedly assaulted despite the presence of law enforcement personnel and an Executive Magistrate.
"I was deeply upset by what happened. In that emotional moment, I used a word against the SP which I should not have used. I regret making that remark," Chaudhury said.
CPI(M) Alleges Attack During Memorial Programme
The Opposition leader alleged that BJP supporters attempted to disrupt the commemorative programme by attacking CPI(M) leaders and activists.
According to Chaudhury, Badal Shil lost his life in 2024 after allegedly being assaulted by BJP workers while returning from filing his nomination papers for the Zilla Parishad elections.

He further claimed that Thursday's gathering witnessed similar disturbances, alleging that the attacks occurred in front of police officials and an Executive Magistrate.
LoP Says He Tried Contacting South Tripura SP
Chaudhury stated that he attempted to contact South Tripura Superintendent of Police Mourya Krishna three times while the alleged violence was unfolding but did not receive any response.
He added that he subsequently spoke with Tripura Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar, informing him about the situation and seeking intervention.
AIS Association Seeks Unconditional Public Apology
Earlier in the day, the Tripura unit of the All India Services Association issued a statement condemning Chaudhury's remarks against the IPS officer.
The association described the comments as derogatory, inappropriate and unacceptable, urging the Leader of the Opposition to withdraw his statement and issue an unconditional public apology.
The organisation also appealed to political leaders across party lines to maintain dignity, civility and mutual respect while performing their constitutional responsibilities.
Political Row Intensifies in Tripura
The controversy has triggered fresh political debate in Tripura, with the ruling BJP and the opposition CPI(M) trading allegations over the events surrounding the memorial programme.
While Chaudhury has acknowledged that his choice of words was inappropriate, the demand for a formal public apology by the All India Services Association has added another dimension to the political confrontation.
