Tripura Minister Ratan Lal Nath Gives Up Escort Vehicles, Cycles to Promote Fuel Conservation

In a symbolic move promoting austerity and fuel conservation, Tripura’s Power, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath has decided to give up his official escort vehicles and travel by bicycle for short distances and public outreach programmes.

Announcing the decision on Wednesday, Nath said that nation-building does not always begin with grand declarations but often starts with small personal commitments and responsible habits.

Responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to conserve petroleum products, the minister said he had rediscovered the familiar experience of cycling from his childhood days.

“This morning I rediscovered the familiar sound of pedals from my childhood. Staying close to the soil gives me a different sense of belonging. Patriotism should not just be spoken, it must be practiced in our habits. Let us all save fuel, protect nature, and build a better tomorrow for future generations,” Nath stated.

The move comes amid a broader austerity and fuel-saving campaign initiated by the Government of Tripura under the leadership of Chief Minister Manik Saha.

As part of the initiative, the state government has introduced several measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption and government expenditure. These include a rotational work-from-home arrangement for 50 percent of Group C and Group D employees in government offices.

Chief Minister Manik Saha has also reduced the size of his security convoy by half, retaining only three additional vehicles. He has additionally opted for rail travel instead of long road convoys during state visits to minimize fuel use and administrative expenses.

Nath’s decision to cycle has drawn widespread public attention across Tripura, with many viewing it as a practical message on sustainability, responsible governance, and environmental awareness.

The gesture reinforces the state government’s emphasis on austerity and highlights how individual actions can contribute to larger national goals of conservation and sustainable living.
