Tripura Records Major Success in Infant Mortality Reduction, Beats National Average: CM Manik Saha

Tripura has emerged as one of the leading states in India in improving maternal and child healthcare services, achieving a significantly lower Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) than the national average, according to the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) Bulletin 2024 released by the Registrar General of India.

Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday praised the healthcare sector’s achievement and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda for their continuous support in strengthening healthcare infrastructure in Tripura.

Tripura Infant Mortality Rate Drops to 12

According to the SRS Bulletin 2024 published in May 2026, Tripura’s Infant Mortality Rate has declined to 12, while the national average IMR currently stands at 24.

The report highlights Tripura’s consistent progress in reducing child mortality over the last three years.

  • Tripura IMR in 2022: 17
  • Tripura IMR in 2023: 15
  • Tripura IMR in 2024: 12

In comparison, the all-India Infant Mortality Rate remained:

  • India IMR in 2022: 26
  • India IMR in 2023: 25
  • India IMR in 2024: 24

The sharp decline in infant mortality reflects the state government’s focused efforts to improve healthcare access and strengthen maternal and neonatal care services across urban and rural areas of Tripura.

Improved Maternal and Child Healthcare Services in Tripura

Chief Minister Manik Saha stated that several healthcare initiatives contributed to the decline in infant mortality in Tripura.

Key factors behind the success include:

  • Strengthening maternal and child healthcare services
  • Increase in institutional deliveries across Tripura
  • Expansion of SNCU and NBSU healthcare facilities
  • Improved neonatal and newborn care infrastructure
  • Expansion of vaccination and immunization programmes
  • Health awareness campaigns in rural and remote areas
  • Better healthcare monitoring and medical outreach services

The state government has reportedly focused on improving healthcare delivery systems at district hospitals, primary health centres, and rural healthcare institutions.

Central Government Support Boosts Tripura Healthcare Sector

The Chief Minister also credited the Central Government for providing continuous support to the healthcare sector in Tripura.

He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for their contribution towards improving healthcare infrastructure, maternal healthcare services, and child welfare programmes in the northeastern state.

According to officials, coordinated healthcare policies and increased healthcare investments have helped Tripura achieve better health indicators compared to the national average.

Tripura Sets Example in Child Healthcare Improvement

Tripura’s achievement in reducing the Infant Mortality Rate below the national average is being viewed as a major milestone in the state’s public healthcare system.

Healthcare experts believe that sustained investment in maternal care, institutional deliveries, newborn care units, immunization programmes, and rural healthcare awareness can further strengthen Tripura’s healthcare performance in the coming years.
