The government of Tripura and the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited have announced a major green energy initiative to promote environment-friendly electricity across the state. Under the new plan, families consuming less than 50 units of electricity per month will receive rooftop solar power systems by paying only Rs 1,000.
Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath made the announcement during the launch of the “Rooftop Solar PV System Handbook” at Gitanjali Guest House on Wednesday.

Tripura Solar Power Scheme Targets 1.5 Lakh Families
According to the minister, nearly 1.5 lakh families have already been identified in the first phase of the project. The initiative is being implemented under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana to expand renewable energy use in Tripura.
The minister stated that the adoption of rooftop solar systems is increasing rapidly in the state. More than 17,000 consumers have already registered under the scheme, while around 3,500 households have successfully installed solar power systems.
Subsidy Details for Rooftop Solar Systems
The state government is offering substantial subsidies for residential rooftop solar installations:
- Rs 33,000 subsidy for a 1 kW solar system
- Rs 66,000 subsidy for a 2 kW solar system
- Rs 85,800 subsidy for a 3 kW solar system
Ratan Lal Nath said the government plans to provide solar systems worth around Rs 66,000 to eligible low-consumption households by collecting only Rs 1,000 from beneficiaries.

150 Megawatt Solar Energy Generation Target
The ambitious renewable energy project aims to generate nearly 150 megawatts of electricity in Tripura. The minister expressed confidence that implementation work could begin as early as next month.
At present, around 3 lakh families in the state consume less than 50 units of electricity monthly. Out of them, 1.5 lakh households will be covered during the initial phase.
Training and Awareness Programmes for Solar Technology
The Tripura State Electricity Corporation is also collaborating with German development agency GIZ to strengthen technical knowledge on solar energy systems.
Special training programmes are being conducted for engineers, officials and vendors on solar system installation, maintenance and repair. Two informative handbooks in English and Bengali have also been published to help consumers understand rooftop solar technology more easily.
Solar Power to Reduce Bills and Increase Income
Highlighting the economic benefits of solar energy, the minister said that consumers will not only save on electricity bills but may also earn income by generating surplus power.
He added that the project would contribute to financial development while supporting clean and sustainable energy in Tripura.
