Tripura to Get Two New Universities: Women’s & Engineering Varsity Approved by Centre

The Ministry of Education, Government of Indiahas officially approved the establishment of two new state universities in Tripura, (Government of Tripura Official Portal) marking a major expansion in the state’s higher education infrastructure. The initiative includes the formation of the first Women’s University in Tripura and a dedicated Engineering University.

According to official sources, academic sessions in both universities are expected to begin from the next academic year, supported by financial assistance from the Union Ministry of Education.

Tripura’s First Women’s University to Be Established

One of the newly approved institutions will be developed as a Women’s University, the first of its kind in Tripura.

The state government has decided to upgrade Women’s College in Agartala into a full-fledged university. This transformation aims to strengthen women’s higher education opportunities across the state and surrounding regions.

The university is expected to offer postgraduate programmes initially, with expansion into professional and interdisciplinary courses in later phases.

Engineering University to Be Developed from TIT Agartala

The second institution will be a Technical and Engineering University, created by upgrading Tripura Institute of Technology TIT Agartala Narsinghgarh.

This upgrade has received formal approval from the central government, enabling TIT to evolve into a full-scale engineering university with expanded academic autonomy and infrastructure.

The institution will focus on engineering, technology, applied sciences, and professional education.

Government Notification and Administrative Setup

The Tripura government has already issued a gazette notification regarding the establishment of the Women’s University.

In parallel, the Directorate of Higher Education, Tripura is moving ahead with administrative arrangements for the engineering university, including the appointment process for key leadership positions.

The posts of Vice Chancellor and Registrar are expected to be notified shortly, marking the first phase of institutional setup.

Faculty Recruitment and Academic Expansion

After leadership appointments, a structured recruitment process will begin for:

  • Assistant Professors
  • Associate Professors
  • Professors
  • Assistant Registrars
  • Deputy Registrars
  • Joint Registrars

These appointments will be made in phases for both universities.

Central Funding and Academic Rollout

The Ministry of Education, Government of India, will provide financial assistance to support infrastructure development and academic operations.

As per official guidelines, both universities are expected to begin Master’s degree programmes from the next academic session.

Employment and Higher Education Opportunities

The establishment of these two universities is expected to significantly boost employment opportunities in Tripura’s education sector.

  • NET/SLET/PhD-qualified candidates may be recruited as faculty members
  • Experienced college lecturers may be promoted to senior academic positions
  • Administrative and research roles will also expand
