Trump Claims US Could Have Eliminated Iran's Leadership During Khamenei Funeral; Tehran Responds Sharply

Relations between the United States and Iran have entered another phase of heightened confrontation after US President Donald  Donald J. Trump claimed Washington had the capability to eliminate Iran's top leadership during the funeral ceremonies of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Speaking in an interview with Axios, Trump asserted that nearly the entire Iranian leadership was present during the funeral gathering and said the United States could have targeted them in a single strike if it had decided to do so.

"I didn't do that because then there would have been nobody left to negotiate with," Trump said, while also questioning the authenticity of the emotional scenes witnessed during the funeral ceremonies.

Iran Rejects Trump's Remarks

Iran reacted strongly to Trump's comments. The Iranian Embassy in Armenia posted a sharp response on social media, stating that while individuals may die, their ideals cannot be destroyed. The embassy further accused the United States of lacking civilization, history and honour.

The exchange of statements underscores the continuing hostility between Washington and Tehran following months of escalating military and diplomatic tensions.

Massive Crowds Continue Mourning in Tehran

For the third consecutive day, hundreds of thousands of mourners gathered at Tehran's Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla to pay their final respects to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iranian authorities launched one of the country's largest security operations for the funeral.

  • Special railway services connecting Tehran with several major cities.

Funeral Procession to Travel Across Multiple Cities

Officials announced that the funeral procession will begin in Tehran before moving through Qom, Karbala and Najaf in Iraq, eventually concluding in Mashhad on July 9, where Khamenei is expected to be buried.

Nuclear Negotiations Put on Hold

Iran has suspended indirect negotiations with the United States during the national mourning period.

At the same time, Tehran has declined to permit inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to access the Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear facilities, adding fresh uncertainty to the future of diplomatic negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme.
