Indian pilot Smit Machchhar has been praised by US President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after a dramatic cockpit confrontation on Flydubai flight FZ1073 left the captain seriously injured and forced the aircraft to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
The Flydubai aircraft was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30 when the co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Smit Machchhar inside the cockpit. According to accounts from Israeli officials and passengers, the aircraft subsequently experienced a rapid descent before the situation was brought under control.
Machchhar, despite suffering serious injuries, reportedly managed to open the cockpit door. Passengers and crew members then entered the flight deck and helped overpower the alleged attacker.
The Boeing 737 was eventually diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. All 174 people aboard the aircraft survived the incident.
Trump Discusses Incident With Netanyahu
US President Donald Trump said he discussed the Flydubai incident with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and praised the actions of the Indian captain.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump described Machchhar's conduct during the emergency positively after learning how the injured pilot responded to the alleged cockpit attack.
Netanyahu also publicly praised Machchhar, describing his actions as instrumental in preventing a potentially catastrophic outcome.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi separately hailed the captain's courage, saying Machchhar continued to act despite being seriously injured.
What Happened Aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073?
According to accounts cited by Israeli officials, the incident began when the co-pilot allegedly attacked Machchhar with a knife.
The aircraft reportedly descended by nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds, creating an immediate emergency.
The captain was seriously wounded during the confrontation. However, he was reportedly able to activate the cockpit-door release, allowing people in the forward section of the aircraft to enter.
Passengers and crew members then confronted the alleged attacker and helped restrain him. Two additional Flydubai pilots who were travelling aboard the aircraft also reportedly assisted in regaining control and completing the emergency landing.
The sequence of events is still being investigated, and Flydubai has urged against premature conclusions regarding the reason for the confrontation.
Captain Smit Machchhar Injured, Stable in Saudi Hospital
After the emergency landing at Tabuk, Captain Machchhar was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The Indian Embassy in Riyadh said Machchhar was in stable condition and receiving medical care. Indian diplomatic officials are in contact with his family and Saudi authorities and are monitoring his treatment.
Reports indicate that Machchhar underwent surgery following the injuries sustained during the cockpit confrontation.
His medical condition has become a major focus following the incident, while Saudi authorities continue their investigation into what happened inside the aircraft.
Israeli Dentist Helped the Injured Pilot
Passengers aboard the aircraft reportedly played a significant role in the emergency response.
Among those who entered the cockpit was an Israeli dentist who provided medical assistance to the badly injured captain.
According to an account reported by The Guardian, Dr Shota Musaev attended to Machchhar after finding him seriously wounded and suffering substantial blood loss. He also reportedly helped restrain the attacker.
The response from passengers, cabin crew and additional pilots helped keep the situation from escalating while the aircraft was diverted to Saudi Arabia.
Who Is Smit Machchhar?
Captain Smit Machchhar is an Indian commercial pilot who previously worked for SpiceJet before joining Flydubai.
According to information cited from his professional profile, Machchhar joined Flydubai in 2022 after spending more than 11 years with SpiceJet. He has accumulated approximately 9,750 hours of flying experience, largely involving Boeing 737 aircraft.
Recent reports identify Machchhar as being from Mumbai, rather than Gujarat as stated in some earlier reports.
His aviation career includes substantial experience as a commander and training captain.
Flight Sent Emergency Signals During Crisis
The aircraft reportedly transmitted emergency signals during the unfolding incident.
Flight-tracking information showed a sharp loss of altitude as the confrontation developed. The aircraft was subsequently diverted from its original route and headed towards Saudi Arabia.
The flight eventually landed safely at Tabuk.
Israeli authorities had also responded to the emergency by preparing fighter aircraft amid concerns that the aircraft could have been subjected to a hijacking or other security threat.
174 Passengers Survived the Emergency
There were 174 people aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, according to Israeli officials cited by Reuters and other international reports.
Following the emergency landing, the passengers remained in Saudi Arabia before continuing their journey to Israel on a replacement aircraft.
The incident therefore ended without the loss of passenger lives, despite the reported violence inside the cockpit and the aircraft's rapid descent.
Investigation Into Co-Pilot Attack Continues
Saudi authorities are investigating the incident and the alleged actions of the co-pilot, who has been identified in reports as an Omani national.
The exact motive behind the confrontation has not yet been established.
Israeli authorities have described the episode as a serious security incident, while Flydubai has cautioned against speculation before investigators determine what led to the confrontation.
The investigation is expected to examine the alleged attack, the rapid descent, cockpit security procedures and the actions of passengers, crew members and the additional pilots who helped bring the aircraft under control.

A Dramatic Aviation Emergency With a Safe Landing
What began as a routine international flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a major aviation emergency after the reported cockpit confrontation.
Captain Smit Machchhar was seriously injured but reportedly managed to open the cockpit door, creating an opportunity for passengers and crew to intervene. An Israeli dentist reportedly provided emergency medical assistance, while additional pilots helped with the aircraft's safe landing.
