Trump Thanks Bangladesh PM as Boeing Order Set to Expand

US President Donald Trump has thanked Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for Dhaka’s decision to purchase Boeing aircraft from the United States, as Bangladesh moves to significantly increase its planned Boeing order.
Trump sent the letter to Tarique Rahman on August 31, expressing appreciation for the Bangladeshi government’s decision and saying he looked forward to meeting the prime minister.
The latest development comes days after US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs Sergio Gor said Bangladesh had agreed to spend billions of dollars on additional Boeing aircraft.
Gor said the new understanding between Trump and Rahman would substantially increase Bangladesh’s earlier Boeing commitment. However, the precise number and value of the additional aircraft have not yet been publicly detailed.
Bangladesh's Boeing Order Could Rise to 25 Aircraft
Bangladesh had already announced a major Boeing procurement plan for Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
In April 2026, Biman signed an agreement with Boeing for 14 new aircraft worth an estimated $3.7 billion. The order comprises eight Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and four Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft.
Bangladesh's broader plan was subsequently reported to involve increasing the Boeing requirement from 14 aircraft to 25 aircraft as part of its aviation expansion and trade discussions with Washington.
The first aircraft from the existing 14-plane agreement is expected to be delivered in November 2031, with the remaining aircraft scheduled to arrive by October 2035.
Why Bangladesh Is Buying More Boeing Aircraft
The Boeing procurement is significant for Bangladesh's aviation sector as Biman Bangladesh Airlines seeks to modernise its fleet and expand international capacity.
Biman currently operates 14 Boeing aircraft. Its April agreement represents the airline's largest-ever aircraft order and includes both wide-body Dreamliners and 737 MAX jets.
The 787-10 aircraft are intended to strengthen capacity on high-demand routes, while the 787-9s are suited to longer international services. The 737-8 MAX aircraft are expected to support regional operations.
Boeing said the new aircraft would help modernise Biman's fleet, increase passenger and cargo capacity and support expansion of its international network.
Boeing Deal Also Linked to US-Bangladesh Trade Relations
The aircraft purchase has taken on wider economic significance because it comes amid negotiations between Bangladesh and the United States over trade and tariffs.
Bangladesh's decision to increase purchases of American products can help strengthen bilateral trade ties while creating additional export opportunities for US companies.
The Boeing order is particularly significant because commercial aircraft represent high-value exports. A large aircraft agreement can therefore have a substantial impact on the overall value of bilateral trade.
Trump Says Boeing Will Not Disappoint Bangladesh
In his August 31 letter, Trump thanked Tarique Rahman for his attention to the Boeing purchase and expressed confidence in the US aircraft manufacturer.

The US president also indicated that he hoped to meet the Bangladeshi prime minister soon. According to reports, Trump additionally conveyed his good wishes to the people of Bangladesh and expressed optimism about the country's future.
What the Boeing Deal Means for Bangladesh
The expanded Boeing plan could give Biman Bangladesh Airlines greater capacity to serve international markets while replacing or supplementing older aircraft.
Boeing's existing 14-plane order already represents a major fleet-modernisation programme. The company said the 787 and 737 MAX families can deliver significant fuel-efficiency improvements compared with aircraft they replace.
For Washington, the deal also represents an important US export opportunity. For Dhaka, it could support Biman's long-term fleet expansion and strengthen aviation connectivity.
With the proposed expansion from the original 14-aircraft commitment toward a larger Boeing purchase, the Bangladesh-US aviation agreement is becoming an increasingly important part of the two countries' broader economic relationship.
