US President Donald Trump will visit China from May 13 to 15, the Chinese government officially confirmed on Monday. During the visit, Trump is scheduled to hold crucial bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on several major global and regional issues, including Iran, trade relations and Taiwan.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Trump will undertake a state visit to China at the invitation of President Xi Jinping.
According to reports, Trump’s visit was initially expected to take place in March or April but was postponed following the outbreak of the Iran conflict. US officials indicated that Trump may press Beijing over its economic ties with Iran during the discussions.
China remains one of the largest buyers of Iranian oil, with Chinese refineries reportedly purchasing crude oil from Iran at discounted prices despite international pressure.
Trade tensions between the United States and China are also expected to dominate the agenda. The two countries have remained locked in disputes over tariffs and market access for several years. Reports suggest both sides may explore measures to stabilize trade relations and negotiate fresh economic agreements.
The Taiwan issue is also likely to emerge as a sensitive topic during the summit-level talks. China considers Taiwan part of its territory, while the United States has continued to provide military and political support to Taipei.
US Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly described the upcoming visit as highly significant. She said Trump does not undertake foreign visits merely for symbolic purposes and added that Americans should expect “good deals” from the trip.
According to the The White House, Trump’s itinerary will include a visit to Beijing’s historic Temple of Heaven along with an official state banquet hosted by the Chinese leadership.
