TTAADC Poll Violence in Maharani: Tipra Motha Candidate Injured in Firing, SP Gomati Hurt

Tension gripped Maharani and adjoining areas of Gomati district on Monday after an alleged firing incident during the TTAADC Village Committee Election 2026 left Tipra Motha candidate Khachindra Reang injured.

The incident was reported from Warengbari under the Maharani area of Udaipur subdivision while polling was underway for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Village Committee elections.

According to reports, Khachindra Reang was among three people injured in the incident. He was initially taken for medical treatment before being shifted to Gomati District Hospital in Udaipur. Police have begun an investigation to establish exactly what happened and identify those allegedly responsible.

The firing subsequently triggered protests and a road blockade near the election strongroom at Maharani Gamaria Higher Secondary School, turning an otherwise high-participation polling day into a tense situation in parts of Gomati district.

Firing Reported Near Warengbari Polling Centre

The incident reportedly occurred during the afternoon at Warengbari, under the R.K. Pur police station area.

Initial reports said a group of unidentified people arrived near the polling centre and an altercation followed. During the confrontation, firearms were allegedly used, resulting in injuries to Khachindra Reang and two others.

News reports have differed on some details surrounding the incident, including the exact sequence of events and the identities of those involved. Police are investigating the circumstances and are yet to establish responsibility conclusively.

Khachindra Reang, who was identified in reports as a Tipra Motha candidate contesting from the Gamaria area, was taken to hospital after sustaining the injury.

The incident prompted the deployment of additional security personnel in the area.

Protest Erupts Near TTAADC Election Strongroom

Following the firing, supporters of Tipra Motha gathered near the Maharani Gamaria Higher Secondary School, where election materials were being secured.

The protesters demanded the immediate arrest of those allegedly involved in the firing and called for a thorough investigation.

The Udaipur-Amarpur road was subsequently blocked, disrupting normal traffic movement and leaving commuters stranded for a period.

Police personnel were deployed in large numbers to prevent the situation from escalating further. Reports later indicated that police intervened to clear the road and restore movement.

Gomati Police Officer Injured During Confrontation

The situation became more serious when a confrontation developed between protesters and security personnel near the strongroom.

Gomati district police officer Anirban Das was reportedly injured after being struck by a brick during the unrest. He was taken to Gomati District Hospital for medical attention.

Other police personnel were also reportedly injured during the confrontation.

The District Magistrate of Gomati district visited the hospital to enquire about the condition of the injured police officer.

The development prompted authorities to strengthen security around the strongroom and nearby areas.

Police Vehicle Reportedly Vandalised

The unrest also resulted in alleged damage to vehicles.

A vehicle belonging to Udaipur Sub-Divisional Police Officer Devanjali Roy was reportedly vandalised amid the tension. Police subsequently increased deployment in Maharani and surrounding locations.

The situation remained tense as security personnel attempted to prevent further confrontation between protesters and police.

IG Manchak Ippar Reviews Law and Order Situation

Amid the escalating tension, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Manchak Ippar reached Udaipur to review the situation.

Senior police and administrative officials continued monitoring developments around Maharani, particularly the polling area and the election strongroom.

Security arrangements were also reinforced to ensure that election materials remained protected and that no further disturbance took place.

Leaders Visit Injured Tipra Motha Candidate

Following the incident, political leaders visited Gomati District Hospital to enquire about the condition of the injured candidate.

The development attracted attention because the firing occurred during polling for the TTAADC Village Committee Election 2026, an important grassroots electoral exercise in Tripura's tribal areas.

The State Election Commission had made extensive security arrangements for the election. Reports said 74 companies of CAPF and around 8,977 personnel from Tripura Police and Tripura State Rifles were deployed for polling across the state.

Chief Minister Manik Saha Takes Stock of Situation

Chief Minister Professor Dr Manik Saha was also reported to have sought information regarding the incident and the condition of those injured.

The Chief Minister stressed the need for maintaining law and order and directed the authorities to take necessary steps to keep the situation under control.

The administration is now focusing on preventing any further violence while ensuring the security of the election strongroom and the surrounding areas.

Traffic Disrupted on Udaipur-Amarpur Road

The protest near the strongroom significantly affected traffic between Udaipur and Amarpur.

The road blockade left passengers, daily commuters and people travelling for urgent work stranded.

Police later moved to clear the road and restore normal traffic movement as security arrangements were strengthened in Maharani.

TTAADC Election Witnesses High Voter Participation Despite Incidents

The violence in Maharani occurred against the backdrop of substantial voter participation across the TTAADC areas.

Polling for the 2026 TTAADC Village Committee elections began at 7 AM on September 28. The election covers 587 Village Committees, with thousands of candidates contesting seats that went to polling.

The State Election Commission reported around 72% voter turnout by 4 PM, despite isolated reports of clashes, alleged attacks and other disturbances in some parts of Tripura.

The election is particularly significant because the Village Committee polls are being held after a prolonged gap, bringing grassroots electoral activity back to the tribal areas of Tripura.

Investigation Underway Into Warengbari Firing

The exact circumstances surrounding the Warengbari firing remain under investigation.

Police are expected to examine eyewitness accounts, medical reports and other available evidence to determine how the incident unfolded and identify those responsible.

While allegations have been made by different political groups regarding the incident, responsibility has not been conclusively established in the reports available so far.

Tipra Motha supporters have demanded the immediate arrest of the persons allegedly involved and called for an impartial investigation.

Authorities, meanwhile, are concentrating on restoring normalcy, protecting the election strongroom and preventing any further escalation in Maharani and adjoining areas.
