C. Joseph Vijay is set to be sworn in as the ninth Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday following the dramatic conclusion of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
The swearing-in ceremony of the new Tamil Nadu government will be held at 10 am at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai amid tight security and massive political excitement across the state.
On Saturday, Vijay met Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Lok Bhavan and formally staked claim to form the government by submitting letters of support from 121 MLAs. The majority mark in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly is 118.
In the Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2026 results announced on May 4, Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 seats. However, the party initially fell short of the majority mark by 10 seats.
Over the past few days, TVK managed to secure crucial post-poll support from several opposition parties and independent legislators. By May 8, the party had gained the backing of five Congress MLAs along with two MLAs each from the CPI and CPI(M).
On Saturday, both the VCK and IUML also extended support to Vijay’s party by pledging two MLAs each, helping TVK comfortably cross the majority figure required to form the government.
Meanwhile, strict security arrangements have been put in place outside the Four Points by Sheraton Mahabalipuram Resort & Convention Center in Mahabalipuram, where all TVK MLAs are currently staying ahead of the swearing-in ceremony.
Vijay’s rise from Tamil cinema superstar to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister marks one of the biggest political developments in recent South Indian politics. Political analysts believe the TVK government could reshape the political landscape of Tamil Nadu, traditionally dominated by the DMK and AIADMK.
Supporters of Vijay have been celebrating across Chennai and several districts after the confirmation of the new coalition government.
