Two Assam Rifles Personnel Killed in Manipur Ukhrul Ambush, Massive Search Operation Launched

Two personnel of the Assam Rifles (assamrifles) lost their lives and several others suffered injuries after heavily armed attackers ambushed a security patrol in Manipur's Ukhrul district on Monday afternoon. The incident marks another major security challenge in the violence-affected northeastern state.

According to preliminary information, the patrol was carrying out an operational movement around 16 kilometres east of Ukhrul town when unidentified gunmen opened heavy fire. The sudden assault resulted in the death of two Assam Rifles soldiers, while the injured personnel were evacuated to nearby medical facilities for emergency treatment. Officials have not yet released the identities of the deceased.

Massive Search Operation Underway in Ukhrul

Soon after the ambush, reinforcement teams rushed to the area and launched an extensive search operation. Security forces have sealed the surrounding region and initiated intensive combing operations to locate the attackers. Surveillance and intelligence gathering have also been intensified as authorities attempt to establish the sequence of events leading to the attack.

Officials said the operation will continue until every individual involved in the ambush is identified.

No Group Claims Responsibility

No insurgent organisation has officially claimed responsibility for the attack. However, security officials noted that parts of Ukhrul district have historically witnessed the presence of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah) or NSCN (IM).

Although the outfit has remained under a ceasefire agreement with the Government of India since 1997, security agencies continue to monitor the region because of recurring insurgency-related concerns in several hill districts of Manipur.

Chief Minister Condemns Attack

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh strongly condemned the killing of the Assam Rifles personnel, describing the attack as a grave act of violence against the nation's security forces.

The Chief Minister assured that those responsible would be identified and brought to justice through a comprehensive investigation.

Why Ukhrul Remains Strategically Important

Ukhrul district occupies a crucial position along the India-Myanmar border and has long been considered one of the strategically sensitive regions in Northeast India. Its rugged terrain and proximity to international borders have historically made it vulnerable to insurgent activities.

Despite continuous counter-insurgency operations by security forces, sporadic incidents of violence continue to pose security challenges across parts of Manipur.

Assam Rifles Continues Frontline Security Role

The Assam Rifles under Home Ministry ((mha) remains India's oldest paramilitary force and plays a pivotal role in border security, counter-insurgency operations and maintaining peace across the Northeast. Its personnel are frequently deployed in high-risk areas to support civil administration and safeguard national security.

Investigators are now examining whether the attackers possessed prior intelligence about the patrol's route and movement. More details are expected as search operations and the official investigation continue.
