Prime Minister Narendra Modi has created history by becoming the longest-serving elected Prime Minister of India. On June 10, Modi completed 4,399 days in office, overtaking the previous record held by India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
Having first taken oath as Prime Minister on May 26, 2014, Narendra Modi has now entered his third consecutive term at the helm of the country. The achievement marks a significant chapter in Indian political history and highlights Modi's continued electoral success over the past decade.
Modi Surpasses Nehru's Elected Tenure Record
The previous record belonged to Jawaharlal Nehru, who served as Prime Minister for 4,398 days after winning India's first general election in 1952. With the completion of 4,399 days in office, Modi has officially become the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in the country's history.
Nehru initially assumed office following India's Independence on August 15, 1947, and remained Prime Minister until May 13, 1952. Following the first Lok Sabha elections, he continued to lead the nation through three successive electoral mandates until May 27, 1964.
Union Cabinet Passes Special Resolution
The Union Cabinet, which met in New Delhi on Wednesday afternoon, congratulated Prime Minister Modi on the landmark achievement. Cabinet ministers welcomed him with a standing ovation and adopted a special resolution acknowledging his record-breaking tenure.
BJP, NDA Leaders Hold Celebrations Across India
Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Union Ministers, Members of Parliament, and party workers organized prayers, temple visits, and havan ceremonies in different parts of the country to mark the occasion.
The celebrations reflected the significance attached by the ruling alliance to Modi's political milestone and leadership journey.
Congress Criticizes Record
The Congress party reacted sharply to the development, questioning the significance of the achievement. Party leaders described the claim as politically motivated and alleged that democratic institutions have weakened during Modi's tenure.
The contrasting reactions from the BJP-led NDA and the opposition Congress have once again highlighted the sharp political divide ahead of upcoming electoral battles.
NDA Parliamentary Party Meeting Focuses on Viksit Bharat 2047
To commemorate twelve years of the Modi-led government, the NDA Parliamentary Party convened an important meeting at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
The gathering was attended by Chief Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers, and senior leaders from 22 BJP-ruled and NDA-governed states and Union Territories.
Apart from congratulating Prime Minister Modi on his historic record, the meeting focused on the roadmap for Viksit Bharat 2047, strengthening Centre-State coordination, accelerating infrastructure and welfare projects, improving ease of living, and enhancing ease of doing business across India.
