Pete Hegseth, the US Defense Secretary, has asserted that Iran’s leadership was compelled to seek a ceasefire, claiming it had no viable alternative. He emphasized that the United States would not permit Iran to acquire nuclear weapons under any circumstances.
He further noted that the Strait of Hormuz remains open to maritime traffic, with both US and Iranian forces maintaining close surveillance over the region.
Earlier, Donald Trump had warned that any nation supplying arms to Iran would face an immediate 50% tariff, with no exemptions.
Following nearly 40 days of heightened tensions, Washington and Tehran have agreed to a two-week ceasefire. Trump stated that the breakthrough came after appeals from Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan’s Army Chief.
Trump also revealed that Iran had submitted a 10-point proposal, which could serve as a basis for further negotiations.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has claimed that the US accepted its proposal, describing the agreement as being reached on Iran’s terms and portraying it as a strategic victory.
