US Enforcement Blocks ‘Rich Stary’ in Strait of Hormuz

The Chinese tanker Rich Stary, currently under United States sanctions, was once again unable to pass through the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday after reportedly being turned back amid heightened U.S. enforcement measures in the region.

According to reports, the tanker departed from Hamriyah Port in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), carrying approximately 250,000 barrels of methanol. As it attempted to exit the Strait of Hormuz, the vessel was forced to reverse course due to what has been described as a U.S. naval blockade beyond the strategic waterway. The tanker had made a similar attempt to cross the strait a day earlier.

U.S. Naval Intervention

Citing a Reuters report, a U.S. official stated that on Tuesday, a U.S. warship intercepted two oil tankers attempting to depart from Chabahar Port in Iran, located along the Gulf of Oman. The action underscores Washington’s continued efforts to enforce sanctions related to Iranian oil exports.

The Rich Stary and its parent company, Shanghai Xuanran Shipping, have been under U.S. sanctions since 2023 for allegedly engaging in business activities with Iran. The U.S. Department of the Treasury has also indicated that the temporary exemption previously granted for the sale of Iranian oil will expire soon and will not be extended, signaling stricter enforcement of sanctions.
