Amid ongoing diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran, the US military on Tuesday launched targeted strikes on mine-laying boats near the strategic Strait of Hormuz and a surface-to-air missile installation close to Bandar Abbas Port, escalating tensions in the Gulf region.
According to the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation was conducted as a defensive measure to safeguard American troops and naval assets deployed in the area.
CENTCOM spokesperson Timothy Hawkins stated that the strikes were aimed at neutralizing immediate threats posed to US warships and international maritime traffic. He added that despite the military action, Washington continues to exercise restraint while ceasefire negotiations remain underway.
The US military alleged that the targeted mine-laying vessels had the potential to threaten commercial shipping routes and international naval operations in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoints.
Diplomatic observers believe the latest military escalation could complicate ongoing US-Iran negotiations. However, backchannel discussions and ceasefire-related diplomacy between both sides are reportedly continuing.
