US to Cut 40,000 Troops From Europe Amid NATO Defence Debate

The United States is considering a major reduction in its military presence in Europe, with a possible withdrawal of up to 40,000 American troops from the region.
Around 80,000 US military personnel are currently deployed across Europe. However, the Pentagon has not yet reached a final decision on whether such a large-scale reduction will take place.
The ongoing review is expected to produce a recommendation by early November. The final decision will then rest with US President Donald Trump.
Trump Pushes NATO Allies to Spend More on Defence
The possible troop reduction comes against the backdrop of Trump's repeated demands that European members of NATO take greater financial responsibility for their own security.
Trump has argued that European allies should strengthen their defence capabilities and reduce their dependence on American military resources.
The Pentagon began a comprehensive review in June covering US troops, military installations and weapons systems stationed across Europe. A reduction in American forces could put additional pressure on European governments to increase defence spending.
Germany, Italy and Spain Could See Major Changes
Germany would be particularly significant in any US troop reduction because it hosts the largest American military contingent in Europe.
Approximately 36,400 US troops are stationed in Germany. Italy hosts around 12,700, while Spain has approximately 3,800 American personnel.
The three countries also contain strategically important US military facilities, including air bases, naval installations and command centres.
These facilities support American and allied military activities across Europe and provide logistical and operational links to missions in the Middle East and Africa.
Why Are US Troops Still Stationed in Europe?
The American military presence in Europe dates back to the period following World War II. US forces were deployed on the continent as part of the broader post-war security arrangement.
Today, US military operations in Europe are coordinated through the US European Command (USEUCOM).
American forces continue to perform several strategic functions, including supporting NATO's collective defence, maintaining military deterrence against Russia and providing military and logistical assistance to Ukraine.
US and European Allies Differ Over Iran Operations
The debate over America's military role in Europe has also been influenced by differences between Washington and some European governments over military operations involving Iran.
During heightened tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran, several European countries avoided direct participation in American military action.

Britain was reportedly informed about a US operation against Iran but did not participate directly. Italy restricted the use of a US military base, while Spain prevented aircraft associated with attacks on Iran from using its airspace and military facilities.
Trump also sought support from European allies for efforts to maintain security and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. European governments, however, largely remained outside direct military operations.
What Could a US Troop Reduction Mean for Europe?
A significant reduction in US forces would potentially require European NATO members to assume a larger share of regional defence responsibilities.
For Washington, shifting more of the security burden to European allies could also allow the United States to redirect military personnel, equipment and other resources toward strategic priorities elsewhere.
The Pentagon's review will therefore be closely watched by NATO members as Europe debates how much responsibility it should assume for its own long-term defence..
